Job Description:

This position is currently being offered as either a Limited Duration appointment for anyone to apply OR as a statewide Job Rotation to all permanent, current State of Oregon employees (this is includes regular status and limited duration employees who have completed trial service).  State of Oregon job rotations require employer approval.

What will you be doing

You will provide leadership through operational oversight, coordination and direction of protection program activities for the John Day Unit of the Central Oregon District within the Department of Forestry. You will oversee programmatic functions administered within the Protection from Fire Program in the Unit’s geographical area including fire suppression, pre-suppression, prevention, dispatch and detection.  You will accomplish this by directly supervising, directing, and monitoring the work of subordinate managers, unskilled, skilled, technical, and professional employees assigned to the protection program.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Candidates whose demonstrate skills, abilities and/or experience in the following:

  • Five (5) years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, forest management, etc., which include assisting with a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation;

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and two (2) years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, or forest management which include assisting with a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation.

  • Experience in fire management, including supervising, directing and providing leadership.

  • Team oriented, with the ability to develop and maintain strong internal and external working relationships

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Competence in responding to rapidly-changing workloads and in prioritizing work to meet objectives.

  • Flexible, dependable and available to work long hours, weekends, evening and holidays with a positive attitude.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of service, workforce diversity, equity and inclusion, team environment, and strong internal communication and alignment.

  • Proven experience as an excellent communicator who is honest, fair and inclusive among employees, partners and stakeholders.
