Make a Difference in Oregon’s Natural Resources!

Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Hines.

This is a full time, seasonal position from April 1, 2021 through September 30, 2021. (These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).

Are you interested in working in Eastern Oregon and applying your skills in a variety of activities involving wildlife habitat development, wildlife guzzler development, and farming. Help ODFW protect and manage lands, wildlife, and public use in Harney and Malheur counties!

What you will do:

• Conduct farming activities on department owned land. Assist biologist staff with field preparations, irrigation, controlling noxious weeds, tree plantings and habitat inventories. Operate ATV/UTV sprayers, backpack sprayers, and boom sprayers to control weeds.

• Construct, maintain and repair watering devices (guzzlers), irrigation equipment, fences and roads on department land or in cooperation with other agencies. Assist biologist with coordinating, monitoring progress and inspecting work with all volunteer personnel.

• Maintain and repair buildings, grounds and structures by painting, welding, plumbing and grounds keeping. Maintain and repair farming and irrigation equipment and certain types of automotive equipment. Operate chainsaws, battery and electric tools, welders, cutting torches, tractors, backhoes, jet boats, ATVs, and 4X4 manual and automatic transmission vehicles.

• Assist in conducting biological inventories. Collect, record and report data under supervision and direction. Observe, count and classify sex, age and species of wildlife. May assist biologist with radio telemetry, aerial antelope surveys and upland bird surveys. Assist with monitoring access, habitat improvement and sign postings.

• Record and maintain a record of daily activities and keep inventory of tools and supplies. Responsible for preparing monthly reports and providing information to the public on hunting, fishing and the Access and Habitat Program.

Working Conditions
• Frequently required to work outside during inclement weather, long hours, before sunrise and after sunset, on weekends, and irregular work schedules. Required to use agricultural chemicals. Frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions.

• Overnight stays and camping are required at department owned facilities or in remote areas

• Frequently performs duties independently or with minimal supervision

• Frequent travel between Malheur County and Harney County as part of regular duties and/or to maintain Watershed Wildlife Areas

• Shared housing (2 bedroom trailer) is available at reduced rent, but the successful applicant is not required to live on site.

• This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. • This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. • This position requires the possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator’s License (PPAL). On your application, be sure to indicate in the Work Experience Description if you have a PPAL. If the selected applicant does not possess a PPAL, they must obtain it within 30 days of hire as a condition of continued employment.

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

• An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR

• Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. (six months of fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree.
