Date: February 2, 2021

Location: Virtual, via Zoom

Time: 8:30am – 3:00pm Pacific Time

Course Description:

Hosted by FEMA Region X and sponsored by the FEMA Risk MAP Cooperating Technical Partners (CTP) Program through partnership with The Polis Center at Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing (IUPUI) and the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, this workshop is the first of a series of four (4) Hazard Risk Modeling Workshops on the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. All 4 of the pilot courses are intended to focus on risk modeling tools and applications, with customization and focus on the primary types of natural hazard risks and data availability specific to Region X.

Models that leverage the powerful tools in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly being used to characterize economic and social impacts of hazards. While offering significant potential for mitigating these risks, models can also produce inaccurate results if the hazard, exposure and other inputs upon which they are based are inappropriate for the use to which they are applied. This virtual workshop will survey the types of inputs required to describe the extent and severity of earthquake and flood hazards in FEMA Region X states.

Target Audience:

This course is intended for decision makers, planners, engineers, architects, and other practitioners that plan for or manage community level natural hazard risk and resilience activities. Prior experience using geospatial tools is not required to attend.
