Duties

 

Our Habitat Biologist 

  • Helps administer the Hydraulic Project Approval process in accordance with the Hydraulic Code.
  • Reviews and issues small and medium-scale HPA’s in accordance with the Revised Code of Washington, Washington Administrative Code, agency policy, and procedures manual.
  • Reviews permit applications and conducts field reviews to provide project assistance to applicants.
  • Provides technical assistance to local governments implementing their fish and wildlife regulations under the Growth Management Act (GMA) and Shoreline Management Act (SMA).
  • Assists Habitat Biologists working on Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Practices reviews.
  • Provides technical assistance for salmon recovery projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Office work includes reading, writing, phone and computer use – teleworking options may currently be available.
    2. Fieldwork requires operation of a variety of field equipment, including safely operating vehicles in off-road driving conditions.
    3. Fieldwork is performed during all weather conditions, in remote forested/aquatic environments and includes walking over rough terrains for short and long distances.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
    2. Hours are flexible, workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Traveling is required to conduct fieldwork and to attend meetings throughout the state.
    2. Periods of overnight travel may also be required. 
  • Tools and Equipment:   
    1. Boots, GPS, clinometer, waders, rain gear and a state-assigned work vehicle.
  • Customer Interactions:         
    1. Agency staff, other government agencies, tribal, private stakeholders, and the general public.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or a related field.

AND 

  • ONE (1) year of professional experience in fish, wildlife or habitat management/research.

     OR

  • A Master’s Degree, or Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for one year of the required experience.

     OR 

  • Professional equivalent experience may substitute, year for year, for education requirement as long as that experience is in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Demonstrated ability to build professional rapport and partner with the public, tribes, and local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Knowledge of ecological processes pertinent to the Northwest.
  • General understanding of regulatory processes, including the Hydraulic Code, Growth Management Act (GMA), State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), and Shoreline Management Act (SMA).
  • Demonstrated ability to work within the regulatory environment including reviewing, issuing, or monitoring environmental permits.
  • Ability and willingness to convey hard information to members of the public in a manner that maintains a positive working relationship.
  • Ability to accept supervisory direction, including seeking and accepting constructive feedback on performance and making efforts to improve as needed.
