Urban Futures Farm is seeking motivated interns for the 2021 season. Urban Futures Farm is a 3.5 acre farm located in Olympia’s Northeast neighborhood near Ralphs Thriftway, and easily accessible via several Intercity Transit bus routes. We operate a 45 share CSA and sell plant starts in the spring. We grow a large variety of vegetable, herbs and fruits in minerally balanced soil, using only organic fertilizers and with minimal use of fossil fuels. We also have a flock of laying hens, keep bees, and partner with community organizations to host various educational events. The farm is run by TJ Johnson, a former TESC faculty member and long-time local environmental and food policy activist.

•Ability to get to the farm and maintain a set schedule
•Willingness to do farm labor which can be physically demanding

Interns may experience:
• Growing and transplanting vegetable starts – we start seeds in small soil blocks in a greenhouse, then move the seedlings into hoop houses before planting in the field
• Preparing fields for planting – tilling, applying soil amendments, shaping beds and installing drip irrigation
• Direct seeding and transplanting plant starts
• Weed control, including hand weeding raised beds
• Harvesting and preparing vegetables for CSA boxes and delivery
• Caring for poultry
• Special projects
• Interns are also encouraged to undertake individual research or other projects, with approval and support of the farm manager.
