Job Summary/Purpose

The purpose of the Sustainability Coordinator is to manage sustainability efforts across campuses and serve as a resource for all areas of the College, including campus operations, dining services, academics, and community relations. The goal of this position is to reduce college energy consumption and waste production, increase student and staff awareness, and establish COCC as a leading regional figure in sustainability.

Terms of Employment:

  • This is a part-time (.75 FTE, 30hr week) 12-month non-exempt position at grade level 15 in the Classified Appendix schedule.
  • This position is being hired on a one-year pilot basis and is not eligible for bumping privileges as described in the Classified Bargaining Agreement, Article 24, Section 2.
  • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
  • Requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
  • The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
  • Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions

Sustainability Coordination

1. Develop Sustainability Strategy for Campus Services and develop COCC’s Energy Management goals.

2. Serve as the COCC liaison for the Energy Trust of Oregon (ETO) Strategic Energy Management program.

  • Collect and analyze campus energy consumption data.
  • Implement energy conservation practices in accordance with ETO recommendations.
  • Publicize energy conservation efforts to students, staff, and community.

3. Coordinate with Campus Services staff to implement efficient and updated centralized trash and recycling procedures.

4. Work with the COCC Grants Office to apply for sustainability-themed grants.

  • Primary focus, areas include campus operations (e.g., energy conservation and waste reduction efforts), sustainability-based infrastructure investments (e.g., solar panel installations, sustainable landscaping, etc.).

Collaboration and Communication Activities

5. Develop on-campus Sustainability marketing materials, workshops and events to engage the COCC and larger Central Oregon community.

6. Collaborate with Campus Services and the Sustainability Committee to develop a comprehensive COCC Sustainability Policy, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

7. Create educational signage around waste and recycling, and act as COCC’s “expert” on recycling efforts.

8. Review and advise COCC’s purchasing department regarding sustainable policies and procedures.

9. Other duties as assigned.

1. Knowledge and experience in sustainability best practices.

2. Ability to work independently, without direct supervision.

3. Ability to collaborate with and provide assistance, advice and information to staff, students, and the public.

4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter.

5. Ability to manage social media and engage in public outreach.

6. Ability to work positively in a team environment to solve problems and provide high-level customer service. Prior experience working on sustainability-related projects.

7. Effective organizational skills.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements

Work is performed during regular working hours and in an ordinary office, mostly sitting. Computer screen is used 50 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Associate’s Degree

2. One year of experience in an office setting, using computers and common business and office applications.

3. Two years’ experience working in a customer service environment.
