Position Opening: Environmental Educator (WSC AmeriCorps)
Snohomish Conservation District, a small public conservation agency located in Lake Stevens, Washington, is looking for an enthusiastic and dependable educator to present classroom environmental lessons (may be virtual and/or in person depending on circumstances) and occasional outdoor field trips for grades 3-12.
The educator will teach multiple environmental education lessons per day in schools throughout Snohomish County and Camano Island. The educator will also engage youth and families through interactive/educational booths at community fairs, school STEM and parent nights, youth environmental service learning (serving with youth and families to plant trees and native plants at local restoration sites), teacher workshops, green schoolyard support, and the regional and state Envirothon competitions for high school students.
Due to COVID-19, SCD staff are currently working remotely. We will work with the Washington Service Corps to adapt the activities of this position to follow public health guidance if circumstances change during the service term. This service term will begin with remote service, so the member will need to be able to access the internet from home. A computer will be provided to the member during the service term. The member must be located in Washington state to serve in the Washington Service Corps. Remote activities will include adapting education to be delivered virtually and through distributed materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
• 4+ months experience working as an educator with K-12 youth.
• Excellent classroom and behavior management skills.
• Ability to adapt teaching style and content to meet the diverse needs of students.
• Strong public speaking skills: loud voice with clear enunciation and pacing- presenting in a confident, engaging manner that draws in the audience.
• Knowledge of environmental subject matter (especially storm water and watersheds) and/or a sincere desire to study and learn.
• An associate degree or at least 2 years of college (preference for coursework in the fields of education, science education, environmental science or a related field.)
• Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to check email daily.
• Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, cultural competency, and equity in education.
• Ability to work collaboratively and openly communicate with teammates
• Ability to self-direct workload and priorities on a daily basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in public school classrooms and/or working with NGSS and Common Core standards. (There will be opportunities to gain experience and training with NGSS during the service term.)
Requirements:
• Reliable transportation to and from our office. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. The ability to drive oneself to teaching locations throughout the District area. We have government vehicles at our Lake Stevens office for use while teaching. When a personal vehicle is used, reimbursement will be provided at the IRSapproved mileage rate. All travel time to schools is counted as service hours.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
• Competency with Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, Publisher, and PowerPoint.
Schedule: The term of this position runs for 10.5 months with term dates of: 2/16/2021-12/31/2021. The environmental educator will serve 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday (with occasional weekend and evening commitments). Exact daily start and end times will vary to accommodate school schedules, but service hours will typically fall between 7am – 5pm. A typical weekly schedule during the school year will consist of 3-4 days teaching at schools with at least one office day for prep and other duties.

• PLEASE NOTE: this position provides a monthly stipend of $1,945 before deductions and withholdings. (SCD is contributing an additional fee to support the member receiving a higher living stipend than the standard one of $1450 listed on the WSC website)
SCD is dedicated to making this a valuable experience for service members. Snohomish Conservation District will provide multiple opportunities for trainings and networking at conferences throughout the term. Opportunities for the member could include:
• Attending conferences like: Storming the Sound, Washington Association of District Employees, etc.
• A term project designed by the member and guided by their interests (curriculum development, video/design work, etc.)
• Cross-training with our farm planners, habitat restoration specialists, Veterans Conservation Crew, stormwater engineer, and/or other SCD teams
