About the Department
Pierce County Parks and Recreation manages over 5,200 acres of open space, trails, developed and undeveloped parks.  We provide recreation programs and infrastructure in active and passive parks and trails. The department consists of three divisions:  Parks and Recreation, Administration and Resource Stewardship. Nature of the Work
An employee in this classification is responsible for performing a wide variety of maintenance and repair tasks for grounds, buildings, structures, and equipment within the Parks and Recreation Department. Employees may typically be required to learn and participate in maintenance activities associated with a variety of skills, trades, and professions. Position Summary

How to be Successful in the Role: 

Having demonstrated knowledge of and experience in performing a variety of grounds and facilities maintenance work. Demonstrating excellent customer service skills with co-workers and customers. Parks and Recreation is not an 8 to 5 job. Therefore being willing to work various days and shifts is a must.

Your Future in this Role: 
This position will work as part of a team that operates, maintains and repairs the infrastructure of the Pierce County Parks system. Your work will be instrumental in providing Pierce County residents with safe and enjoyable parks and facilities. Success in this position also offers a great foundation for future professional growth within the Parks and Recreation department.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • General Park maintenance duties such as opening/closing facilities, grounds maintenance, turf mowing, garbage/litter pick up and disposal, site and structure inspections, maintenance and repair and vandalism repair.
  • Specialized maintenance and operations duties include, natural and synthetic athletic field maintenance and preparation, irrigation inspection, maintenance and repair, light equipment maintenance and repair.

Core Strategic Responsibilities:

  • Perform specialized athletic field maintenance on natural and synthetic turf, ice rink maintenance and trail maintenance; including irrigation, inspection, troubleshooting and repair, operation of various of power tools and specialized equipment based on weather and physical condition of fields.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and independently to accomplish assignments. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrate proficiency utilizing an automated Work Order system to retrieve assignments and document work performed.
  • Demonstrate positive attitude and flexibility.

Qualifications

Recruiting Requirements:

  • Two or more years work experience in parks maintenance, landscaping, golf course grounds keeping, construction, or maintenance trades.
  • Additional education or training may substitute for up to one year of related experience.

Possession of, or the ability to obtain may be required for some positions:

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license
  • Valid First Aid Certification including CPR
  • Valid Washington State Pesticide License

Satisfactory physical condition may be required, as indicated by a County approved medical examination. Employees are subject to 24-hour on call availability and must be able to work any shift at any location as required. Employees may be required to provide their own tools.Supplemental Information
