BIO INTENSIVE GARDEN and ORCHARD – *Students learn the Bio-intensive garden bed preparation and companion planting techniques by preparing, designing a planting scheme, planting and maintaining one or more garden beds. Fall bed preparation.
*Blueberry Patch – 3 dozen mature blueberry patch – secure and adjust mulching fabric, learn winter pruning.
*Care of the apple orchard includes sheet mulching and late fall pruning around 4 of the Apple trees.
*Start House – setting of seeds into seed trays and soil blocks using heat pads and micro fiber fabric hydration for winter crops and late winter transplanting into the outdoor beds.
* Various research/design/build projects include: Grape Arbor, movable high tunnel greenhouse, mushroom cultivation.
* Wall murals on interior barn walls 4 spaces – each 8X12. Present portfolio – farm theme.
*Print interpretive native plant images and build posts for Native Plant walk.
*Restore Edible forest garden.
Energy, curiosity, physical ability to handle demanding work, respect for the natural environment, flexible work schedule, vehicular transportation.
Learning Objectives ​(Required for Internships and Work Study)​
Demonstrate a basic understanding and knowledge of permaculture and bio intensive farming techniques through hands-on activities of double dug bed preparations, companion planting , direct sowing VS transplant, mulching and composting techniques used for bedding plants VS, fruit trees and berry patch.
