Introduction: 

This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). The Marbled Murrelet Program Officer is responsible for coordinating Marbled Murrelet conservation activities in the Pacific Northwest region and building high level relationships with public and private sector and local stakeholders. The Marbled Murrelet Program Officer is supervised by the Western Regional Director. 

This position requires a great deal of contact, in person, and by telephone and correspondence, with the public, government agencies, companies, and potential and existing donors. This work requires initiative, experience in getting on-the-ground results for bird conservation, strong communication and writing skills, ability to multi-task and work individually as well as with a team, and attention to detail. 

Primary Duties:

Lead efforts to develop and implement projects and advocate to save the Marbled Murrelet in the Pacific Northwest including the following:

  • Identifying priority habitat, including at sea habitat use, starting with existing resources (possibly also including some new tracking technology)
  • Engaging with stakeholders and finding creative solutions to mitigate impacts
  • Working with state and federal partners in Oregon and Washington on updating recovery plans for Marbled Murrelet and supporting the Northwest Forest Plans
  • Working with ABC’s Policy team in Washington, D.C. to coordinate efforts at the local, state, and federal levels
  • Developing excellent working relationships with major conservation stakeholders and funders in the Pacific Northwest including federal and state agencies, forest companies, and conservation organizations to advance bird conservation
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree and at least four years work experience or other appropriate combination of education and experience
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently, accurately, in a deadline-oriented position.
  • An in-depth understanding of the geography, land use, conservation issues, birds, and conservation partner of the Pacific Northwest – especially as it pertains to murrelet conservation
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people from a wide range of cultures while always maintaining a sense of humor and a positive attitude
  • Excellent communication (writing, in-person, and public speaking) and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically plan annual and long-term programmatic goals
  • Willingness to travel
