Sophomore and under: $14.05 per hour
Junior: $15.05 per hour
Senior: $16.05 per hour
Graduate student: up to $19.05 per hour
*DNR provides housing in some locations or a $500/month housing stipend if free housing is not available.

Are you majoring in Biology or the Natural Resources and want to gain first-hand, real-world experience? If so, you may be perfect for the DNR Natural Areas Internship Program. This opportunity with DNR offers interns valuable networking possibilities and on-the-job experience.
This unique position will work primarily with the DNR Southeast Region Natural Areas Program staff on select projects. The Natural Areas Program is responsible for managing over 15,000 acres across 15 sites that support rare and sensitive plant species, animals, and high quality native ecosystems. This intern will assist staff in ecological restoration projects, invasive species management, and data collection. These duties will be performed primarily under the direct supervision of Natural Areas Staff.
The internship program is designed to give students educational and hands-on field experience in a variety of duties that will include:
  • Various restoration activities
  • Invasive species control
  • Inventory and mapping of invasive species, rare plants and infrastructure
  • Long term plant community monitoring
  • Annual rare plant monitoring
  • Educational outreach events

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be a student majoring in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management or related field and will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester.
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Physical ability to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote, forested or back-county landscapes and terrain
  • Experience using Microsoft office products including Excel and Word
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.

    • Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
    • Plant Taxonomy
    • Conservation Biology
    • Experience with ARCGIS program
  • Knowledge of plant identification including ability to use a dichotomous key
  • Knowledge of standard field survey methods
  • Experience using GPS equipment for mapping and data collection
  • Candidates should have work or recreational experience driving on logging roads.
