Staff Environmental Scientist – PNW (Regular Full-Time)
As our Staff Environmental Scientist, you will be primarily responsible for performing assessments of critical areas and writing critical area reports. You will also be responsible for conducting habitat surveys, preparing permit applications, documenting your file review and field observations in field reports.
A critical part of each critical areas assessment is file review. Before beginning field work, you will be responsible for researching publicly available maps and databases to record geology, soils, streams, wetlands, and other documented sensitive and priority habitats and priority/listed species at the project site or in the project vicinity.
The field component of our critical areas assessments generally consists of delineating wetlands, conducting stream Ordinary High Water Mark determinations and assessing the project site and project vicinity for the presence of priority habitats and fish and wildlife habitat conservation areas. In addition, site evaluations can include assessing sites for mitigation potential, inventorying habitat and habitat structures and recording wildlife observations, surveying marine shorelines and eelgrass habitat, and conducting forage fish spawning surveys on marine shorelines. You will often be asked to use GPS technology to document the location of critical features at the site.
Additional field duties may include assisting our River Team with stream/river geomorphic assessments and conducting basic stream habitat and morphology assessments.
Documenting your file review and field observations in field reports and writing critical area reports will require strong technical writing skills. A knowledge of ArcGIS will allow you to create maps documenting the location of critical features at the project site (not a required skill).
Qualifications
- BS in Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Watershed Science or equivalent required
- Ability to perform wide range of physical activities and field work
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Proven ability to be a problem solver
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite
- Proficiency with ArcGIS and GPS technology is preferred
- Valid driver’s license required.
Education in and/or knowledge of the following is preferred:
- Native plant identification (for wetland delineation and identification of vegetation)
- Soils and wetland science
- Stream/lake/marine ecology and dynamics
