Job Description

PNNL’s Marine Sciences Laboratory (MSL) has robust marine research programs in Sustainable Environmental Systems focused on renewable ocean energy, climate change impacts in the coastal ocean, ecological restoration, ecotoxicology, marine biotechnology, and contaminant fate and effects in the coastal ocean.

• Conducts research and development activities including standard technical procedures that range from routine to specialized, under technical supervision.

• Operates in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, laminar flow hood, and with specialized instrumentation in order to conduct research.

• Reports progress appropriately to project and line managers.

• Completes assignments independently. Assignments are performed under general supervision and are reviewed upon completion of results.

• Helps structure and write analytical results, data reports, methods, and procedures. May be a contributing author for publications.

• Operate and maintain trace metal instrumentation (ICP-MS coupled with seaFAST preconcentration system, ICP-OES)

• Familiar with sample collection, processing, and analysis of diverse environmental matrixes (soils, sediments, biota tissue, freshwater, and seawater) using clean hand techniques.

• Knowledge of EPA 200 series test methods for drinking water and Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste: Physical/Chemical Methods (also known as SW-846) 3000 and 6000 series test methods for the preparation and analysis of metals by ICP-MS and ICP-OES. Identifies and leads efforts to develop new procedures and methods for complex environmental matrices. May include technical mentoring.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma and 6+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate’s degree and 4+ years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma and 8+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate’s degree and 6+ years of relevant work experience or relevant Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of relevant work experience.

• BS/BA in a chemical, physical, biological, or environmental science from an accredited institution.

• Knowledge and experience of minor and trace element analysis.

• Experience working in diverse teams of people.

• More than three years of laboratory experience in sample preparation and chemical testing of trace elements by ICP-MS and ICP-OES in aqueous (fresh water, seawater, non-potable water, drinking water), solid and tissue matrices using clean hand techniques

• More than three years ICP-MS operating experience

• Certificate of evidence of a formal training course in ICP-MS

• Knowledge of The NELAC Institute (TNI) accreditation requirements for laboratories performing environmental analysis

• Knowledge and analytical experience of minor and trace element analysis applied to marine systems

• Demonstrates ability to work well with teams

• Good interpersonal skills and effective communication including oral and written skills

This position requires the ability to obtain a federal security clearance in a timely manner. Which requires:

• Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

• Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
