THE MANAGEMENT FELLOW PROGRAM
The City of Tacoma Management Fellow Program is a nationally recognized program that has been training future municipal leaders since 2006. You can see where past Fellows have gone by visiting our webpage to meet current and past Fellows.

The program is designed to attract, develop and retain talented individuals with an interest in a local government management career. This program gives selected participants the opportunity to observe firsthand the efforts of a mid-sized city government working to resolve some of its most pressing issues. Our program is unparalleled in terms of the opportunities participants will have to meet and network with executives and managers. Successful participants are highly recruited by departments to fill positions at the city, and many of our top-level executives began their career with the City in this program.

This is a special recruitment for a Management Fellow to begin January 4, 2021, and end December 31, 2021. The Management Fellow salary for year one is $50,419.20, with the opportunity for a performance based raise at 6 months. The current recruitment is open to talented individuals holding a master’s degree in any topic with a preference for those who hold Master’s Degrees in Public Administration or Public Policy; or those who will have satisfactorily complete all coursework for their Master’s Degree by January 1, 2021. A wide range of experiences
If selected, you will learn about every facet of a mid-sized, urban, complex city operation from the ground up. During this exciting, and fast-paced 12 months, you will:

  • Work on a variety of assignments and projects that affect our community of nearly 210,000 residents.
  • Gain exposure to innovative best practices in our award-winning organization through your rotations in the City Manager’s Office, Office of Management & Budget and an operating department that provides direct service to the community.
  • Participate in the process of setting city policy.
    – Serve on the internal employee board to implement equity practices rooted in the City’s equity framework resulting from the City Manager and Utility Director’s listening sessions in 2019.
  • Provide staff support at City Council meetings.
    – Support the Community, Vitality, and Safety Standing Council Committee.
  • Work directly with residents and city staff on service delivery to the public.
    – Provide staff support to the Mayor’s Youth Commission
    – Provide staff support to a Neighborhood Council
    – Provide staff support to a City Commission, Board, or Committee

Upon completion of the 12-month program, City staff will work with each successful Management Fellow to explore full-time position opportunities within the organization, that matches the individual’s career interests.
*Fellows are expected to complete a minimum of 12 months in the fellowship prior to pursuing other opportunities within the City thus ensuring continuity of the Fellow program.

Master’s Degree from an accredited educational institution program. Applicants must have satisfactorily completed all coursework upon appointment into this classification.

You are eligible to apply if you still need to complete an internship, thesis or comprehensive exam, as long as all courses are completed prior to appointment.

Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA) or Master’s Degree in Public Policy (MPP) preferred.
License Requirements:
