The Puget Sound Marine Groundfish Senior Research Scientist is the agency expert on the biology, ecology, and status of Puget Sound marine groundfish resources.

As an expert level Scientist, you will be responsible for planning, developing and designing professional biological studies, research and resource assessments for groundfish in the inland marine waters of Washington.

With your experience, you will be the Director’s designated consultant on Puget Sound marine groundfish management issues.

This is an opportunity for an experienced leader to effectively communicate scientific results and management recommendations at scientific meetings, management briefings and public meetings.

The ideal candidate is resourceful, creative and can develop innovative solutions to complex problems in the office and in the field.

Duties

Our Puget Sound Marine Groundfish Senior Research Scientist
  • Conducts population status reviews and stock assessments of marine groundfish species incorporating survey, fishery, and biological data into determinations of present status, abundance trend and fishing opportunities.
  • Analyzes data using advanced statistical and scientific methods.
  • Publishes research results and present papers in public and scientific forums.
  • Makes management recommendations based on best available science.
  • Serves as the Department’s representative on the Scientific and Statistical Committee of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.
  • Plans and executes resource surveys and studies using standard and advanced techniques.
  • Supervises employees providing mentorship and guidance to foster their achievements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Teleworking options are currently available for office work.
    • Periodic fieldwork aboard seagoing vessels and on beaches using diverse sampling equipment.
    • Fieldwork includes outdoor exposure, inclement weather/water conditions and possible contact with dangerous marine life.
    • May work as an agency scuba diver.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
    • Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules – exchange time will be accrued for hours worked in excess of 40.
    • Fieldwork and travel may require flexible scheduling.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Frequent travel, up to 50% of time.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Various sampling equipment including trawls, beach seines, remotely operated vehicles, scientific echosounders, hydraulic blocks, and hook-and-line gear.
    • Marine vessels, small craft and outboard motors.
    • Toxic chemicals including formalin and ethyl alcohol.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Participate in meetings with and give presentations to members of the public, federal/state agencies, tribal members, academic collaborators, legislators and others.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in fisheries science, biology, wildlife, habitat, zoology or in mathematics with emphasis on animal population biology or closely allied field.

          OR

  • Professional equivalent experience may substitute, year for year, for education requirement.

AND

  • Four years of professional experience designing, conducting, and supervising multidisciplinary fish, wildlife or habitat related research studies.

          OR

  • Three years of experience as a Fish and Wildlife Research Scientist 1 will substitute for the professional experience.

          OR

  • A Doctoral degree in one of the above fields of study will substitute for two years of the required experience.

AND

  • Three articles published or in press refereed literature, two articles must be as senior author, the third article must be as senior or secondary author.

AND

Knowledge and experience, this can include voluntary, personal, academic or quantifiable experience:

  • Research of the biology, life history, ecology of northeastern Pacific marine fishes including life history parameters, habitat relationships, ecological interactions, fishing patterns, management history, and past and current research.
  • Marine fisheries including trawl, long lining, set netting, drag seining, and other capture fisheries including vessels, fleet patterns, catch rates, catch evaluation, effort characteristics, and regulations.
  • Survey techniques for marine and other fish populations including the design, development and implementation of bottom trawl, mid-water trawl, beach seining, purse seining, set netting, long lining, scuba, video, remote-operated vehicles, submersibles, hydroacoustic, and other new or developing techniques.
  • Quantitative models, statistics, and modeling techniques to characterize and track fish populations and predict the status and trends of marine fish populations. (Techniques include descriptive, inferential, and others statistical methods, survey and experimental design, demographic modeling, mortality and maturity rate analysis, and ecological modeling. Skills using computers employing modeling, statistical, database, and other analytical software.
  • Scientific research techniques including hypothesis testing, data analysis, and program design.
  • Project management techniques including goal setting, establishing objectives, implementing programs, developing and managing timelines and budgets, reporting results, developing proposals, and motivating staff.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and experience, this can include voluntary, personal, academic or quantifiable experience:

  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience organizing, managing and maintaining records.
  • Mathematical reasoning and statistical theory experience.
  • Observation, inspection, and problem recognition.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain scuba diving equipment and complex survey equipment.
  • Ability to safely pilot vessels under a range of weather and tide conditions.
  • Ability to recognize over 150 species of marine bottomfish and invertebrates from the Northeast Pacific Ocean.
