Kootenai Environmental Alliance, North Idaho’s oldest environmental nonprofit, is searching for our next Executive Director!  Nearing our 50th anniversary, we’re at a pivotal time in our organization’s history.   We’re critically evaluating programs, projects and initiatives that are a part of how KEA fulfills our mission.  We’re moving from being event and grant dependent to an organization with multiple revenue streams.  We’re reengaging with long time community partners and building new local and regional relationships.

We’re looking for a passionate leader with nonprofit or business background.  You’ll have a proven record of coaching teams, empowering volunteers, supporting a board of directors, and fundraising via diversified revenue streams.  And, you just might have the skill sets we need to ensure that we continue to conserve, protect and restore the environment in North Idaho and the Idaho Panhandle.

Executive Director Job Description

Reports to:

Board Chair and Board of Directors, as appropriate

Position Description:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Kootenai Environmental Alliance staff, contractors and volunteers, programs, and execution of its mission. She or he will initially develop deep knowledge of core programs, projects and initiatives, organizational revenue streams and supporters.

Duties Specific to the Executive Director:

Leadership & Management

  • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
  • Actively engage and energize Kootenai Environmental Alliance’s volunteers, board members, program and event committees, partnering organizations, and funders.
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; serve as ex-officio of each board committee; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing operations.
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain Kootenai Environmental Alliance’s staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.

 Fundraising & Communications

  • The ED is responsible for raising the entirety of Kootenai Environmental Alliance’s general operational budget, including his/her salary.
  • Expand local and regional revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
  • Build and regional business partnerships and establish relationships with current funders.

 Qualifications

The ED will be thoroughly committed to Kootenai Environmental Alliance’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, fund development, volunteer management and communications experience.

Specific requirements include:

  • Advanced degree, ideally in Environmental Education, Nonprofit Management or a related field of study, with at least 10 years of management experience.
  • Track record of effectively leading and managing staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.

 Compensation

Salary for the Kootenai Environmental Alliance Executive Director is $50,000-$60,000, with annual paid time off, mileage reimbursement and a cell phone/internet stipend.
