This recruitment is essential to maintain operations and fulfill WFDW’s legal obligations.  Essential and critical function:  Staff necessary to prosecute fisheries, hunting opportunities.

We are looking for applicants who possess excellent people skills, the ability to juggle several high-priority scopes of work, and who want the opportunity to independently problem-solve.
This position conducts creel survey of sturgeon sport fisheries between McNary Dam and John Day Dam.  This fishery monitoring is used to keep recreational harvests within assigned seasonal guideline.  White Sturgeon surveys are one of the tasks required to complete the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) “Status and Habitat Requirements of White Sturgeon” contract.  It’s integral to the objective of rebuilding white sturgeon populations and essential to achieving the agency goals.
KEY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Interview anglers and record their fishing time, location, target species, and catch
  • Collect biological and mark sample data from fish
  • Conduct daily counts of boats and bank anglers
  • Review information carefully, recognizing when pertinent information is incorrect or missing
  • Submit sampling data and weekly reports summarizing creel sample data
  • Attend team briefings and required training.
  • Complete semi-monthly Total Time form
  • May (rarely) creel in The Dalles or Bonneville reservoirs
  • May assist with stock assessment tagging

Working Conditions

Working sitting, including hazards:
Field work includes along highways, at boat ramps and riverbanks along the Columbia River primarily from McNary Dam to Boardman, OR marina and Crow Butte State Park in Washington.
Exposure to hazards of driving, boat docks, and inclement weather.
Considerable amount of time driving a pickup truck, sedan, or SUV.
Need to walk steep banks and rugged shores to reach anglers or to reach live sturgeon or carcasses.

Schedule:  

  • Work schedule is flexible (5) 8-hour days and/or (4) 10-hour days per week, including days, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Tools and Equipment:

  • Vehicle, binoculars, measuring device, tag envelopes, PIT tag detector, CWT wand, knife, hemostats, scale cards, snout labels, plastic bags, towel or rags, PFD, cell phone.

Travel Requirements:

  • Likely no overnight travel. Little if any.

Customer Interactions: 

  • Interviewing anglers, collecting data from their fish, answering questions regarding fishery status and fishing regulations.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.”   Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED and at least one year of high school science.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license.

Preferred candidate will have work experience in the following:

  • Creel survey or other public interaction.
  • Field collection and recording of fish and/or wildlife data.

Knowledge of:

  • Sport fishing gear and methods (especially relative to sturgeon fishing).
  • Fish physiology (especially that of sturgeon).
  • MS Word, Excel, Outlook, basic file management skills.

Ability to:

  • Use PIT tag and CWT readers, interview anglers, collect appropriate data, and check for sampling marks.
  • Identify white sturgeon and common salmonid and warmwater species of the Columbia River.
