Position Summary

The Environmental Science and Management (ESM) Department at Portland State University (PSU) is hiring a Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) member to provide instruction for a suite of courses for majors. PSU NTTF faculty members are reviewed annually based on successful teaching and service and are eligible for Continuous Appointments after 6 years of full time employment, with 3-year reviews thereafter.

Responsibilities include teaching the equivalent of nine 4-credit courses during each academic year (three quarters, 9 month term of service), participating in faculty meetings and departmental activities, and serving on departmental or university committees.

Instructional Activities

Teach the equivalent of 36 credit hours during the academic year primarily in core undergraduate sequences, including courses such as:

ESM 100 & ESM 150: Portland’s Environment & Orientation to ESM;

ESM 220 & ESM 221:Intro Environmental Systems and Applied Environmental Studies;

ESM 230 & 231 Environmental Chemistry I & II and Labs and Recitations;

ESM 320, ESM 321, ESM 323 & ESM 324: Environmental Systems I & II and Labs;

ESM 322 & ESM 325 Environmental Risk Assessment and Lab;

ESM 340 & ESM 342 Research Methods in Environmental Science and Field Methods.

Primary Activity          I – Instructional

Minimum Qualifications

A doctorate in environmental science, or related environmental fields, with specializations suitable for teaching a significant subset of the listed courses.

An established track record and proficiency teaching a range of courses at the undergraduate level.

Experience creating, teaching, and working with others to develop curriculum for online, hybrid, and in-person courses with labs and field experiences.

Demonstrates capacity to teach a diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications

A pedagogy skillset that includes attention to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Experience developing and implementing inquiry-based curriculum.

Experience mentoring graduate teaching or research assistants including, serving on departmental graduate committees and other departmental service.

Experience in building partnerships with agencies, non-profits, or other community partners.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be between $45,612 – $56,135. The starting salary may be negotiable above this range, however it will be dependent upon the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
