Hourly Wage: $23.71/Regular/Full-Time

This position will work as a member of our Rangeland crew, sampling vegetation and collecting plant and animal data. This position will be assist in the implementation of the vegetation monitoring activities, including transportation, data collection and data entry. The position may plan and assist with implementation of daily tasks completed by a work crew. The position will navigate to and from remote sites in rugged terrain to collect and preserve plant species. The incumbent will assist with the implementation of restoration projects. The incumbent will identify plant species using dichotomous plant taxonomy keys.

Examples of Work Performed:

 Plan and coordinate daily activities of field crew, including sampling locations and transportation needs.

 Plan and coordinate data collection, data entry and GIS activities of field crew

 Participate in supervision of field crews (regular or temporary)

 Communicate with supervisor and program manager on work progress.

 Navigate to remote field locations by vehicle and by foot to set up survey equipment or detect species (plant and animal).

 Locate survey points using GIS or topographic maps and establish permanent survey points (orienteering knowledge).

 Conduct vegetation (identify plant species identification, using taxonomic keys) habitat and species specific surveys as required.

 Use hand held data devices and digital camera to collect GPS and habitat data.

 Assist in the development or review of Yakama Nation Wildlife or other Natural Resources Management Strategic plans.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 Knowledge of East Cascades/Columbia Basin plants, habitats and animal species.

 Knowledge of conducting a variety of habitat or species specific surveys.

 Knowledge of using a digital camera, GPS unit and hand-held data devices to collect habitat and vegetation data.

 Knowledge of Yakama Nation Law & Order Code.

 Knowledge of the Yakama Treaty of 1855.

 Ability to identify plants and animal species (using taxonomy).

 Ability to utilize horses for use in program/range activities.

 Ability to use topographic maps to navigate to remote sites.

 Ability to learn and complete complex animal, habitat or vegetation sampling techniques.

 Ability to drive a 4wd vehicle in rugged terrain.

 Ability to work long hours and walk long distances in rugged terrain in inclement weather conditions.

 Ability to work well as a team.

 Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

 Ability to maintain accurate records and data pertinent to field surveys.

Minimum Requirements:

 Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources or related field.

 Three years of Wildlife Research work experience.

 Required to pass pre-employment drug test.

 Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

 Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Preferred Requirements:

 Master of Science in Natural Resources or related field.
