Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is looking for a college student or recent graduate who is interested in assisting with the refuge Environmental Education (EE) and Volunteer Programs. The SCA volunteer will facilitate spring field trips and outreach programs for K-12 students. The volunteer will facilitate in-classroom activities, aquatic ecology studies, and provide guided nature walks. The intern will also conduct EE off refuge for local schools. The SCA intern may also provide outreach to the public through fairs, presentations, and other community events. The volunteer may also become involved in a variety of work projects including habitat and trail restoration.
You will conduct environmental education programs for school and civic groups (80%), and provide general environmental education program maintenance (20%).

This project will fill a need for high quality environmental education for the public of all ages that will instill a sense of environmental awareness and responsibility and meets the needs of the community and the refuge purpose and mission.  It is our ultimate goal through this Program, to foster long-term interest in the conservation of natural resources among citizens of all ages within communities of the Inland Northwest.

Compensation amounts:
– $650- one time RT travel allowance
– $85 – weekly living allowance
– AmeriCorps eligible ($1,311 education award)

** It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

  • Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is located in Spokane county in north eastern Washington. The refuge is 7 miles south of Cheney and 20 miles sw of Spokane, WA.
  • On the job training and orientation on the refuge’s environmental education program. Safety training will be provided. CPR and First Aid certification may also be provided. Waterfowl and plant identification training will also be provided.
