Lynker is looking for full-time open-source GIS software engineer to support our growing Geospatial Intelligence Division (GID) team at NOAA’s National Water Center. Remote work is allowed for this position. Minimum of Green Card (i.e. US Permanent Residency) is REQUIRED at time of application.

Lynker’s GID Floodplain Inundation Mapping (FIM) group is focused on enhancing the utility of NOAA-National Weather Service real-time flood forecasts by generating real-time flood hazard maps, work that has to date primarily utilized ESRI software and related programming languages. ArcGIS will remain a partial solution, but this position will assist the FIM team explore alternative Open Source GIS and solutions by developing (coding) existing and new flood mapping routines and related geospatial analysis in an open source environment.

The successful candidate will be an experienced software developer with experience working with large geospatial datasets (e.g. grids, points, polylines and polygons) and Open Source GIS to perform geospatial analysis. Experience with both ESRI and open source geospatial libraries, but with preference for open source (e.g. gdal, geopandas etc.) is important. Programming languages and related skills of interest include netCDF, json docker, Python, C, and experience working in a HPC environment. The team also use remotely sensed data so experience with open source technologies such the Open Data Cube (ODC) initiative (opendatacube.org) are also of interest.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop open source geospatial software solutions and routines for floodplain inundation
  • Design, build, and evolve software solutions in a distributed team environment using source control and sound software engineering principles
  • Work in a distributed, dynamic, highly collaborative environment with scientists and engineers
Requirements
  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science, GIS, Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience with geospatial data management and analysis technologies: Python, Jupyter notebooks, web development, databases, cloud computing
  • Demonstrated experience developing customer-focused software for analysis
  • Experience developing geospatial software applications for remote sensing/GIS analysis
  • Experience using Python and other programming languages
  • Demonstrated competency in the use of software engineering principles
  • Experience performing data science
  • Knowledge of remote sensing concepts. Can work with and understand a wide range of geospatial data formats. Experience with optical/radar remote sensing datasets

Useful additional skills:

  • Experience with machine learning
  • Experience with web development technologies, relational & non-relational databases in Unix/Linux environments
  • Experience developing scaleable cloud-based solutions (AWS, Azure, Google).
  • Ability to travel domestically, and interfacing with users and external clients
