We are excited to share information about the PhD in Geography program at Arizona State University. Our program has continually produced innovative geographers and spatial scientists, sought by esteemed educational institutions, government agencies and private industries to tackle some of the most pressing environmental and societal challenges facing our world today.

Graduate students in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning are prepared to tackle these challenges due in part to the diverse experience provided via access to our state-of-the-art research centers – the Spatial Analysis Research Center (SPARC), the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS), and the Urban Climate Research Center (UCRC). In these centers, students have the opportunity to engage with our distinguished and world-renowned faculty and work on challenging real-world problems using and creating innovative applications.

As the National Research Council’s 7th ranked geography program, we are able to attract some of the best and brightest academics. Our faculty members include:

  • Four members of U.S. National Academy of Sciences
  • An Academia Europaea member
  • Four fellows with the American Association of Geographers
  • Collaborators with NASA and the US Department of Energy

Our faculty’s expertise offer students a variety of research opportunities, including: enhancing emergency preparedness during extreme heat events, predictive modeling for agricultural and urban applications, Aeolian geomorphology and sediment transport.

In addition to working with stellar faculty, selected applicants receive generous 4-year funding packages along with financial support toward travel, data purchases, and other resources. https://sgsup.asu.edu/degree-programs/graduate-degrees/financial-support
