FISH & WILDLIFE RESEARCH SCIENTIST 2 (RS2)

Duties

Our Aquatic Research Section Manager   

  • Provides leadership in the Program, Division and Section.
  • Supports the agency mission by designing and developing research projects, monitoring studies and literature reviews critical to agency’s needs.
  • Expertly crafts detailed aquatic biodiversity research monitoring plans.
  • Designs study protocols to implement research designs and sound research studies.
  • Assembles, leads, trains and mentors interdisciplinary research teams to conduct research and monitoring and builds scientific support related to the conservation and restoration of aquatic habitats.
  • Publishes scientific, peer-reviewed research.
  • Interacts with other research personnel that serve on management teams.
  • Interprets and applies findings of scientific studies to inform and guide management decision-making and policy.
  • Independently and cooperatively develops successful research grant proposals that fund actionable science critical to the mission of the agency.
  • Effectively communicates with stakeholders (policy makers and other scientists) to identify and prioritize research needed to address management concerns.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work setting, including hazards: 
    • Work is performed mostly in an office setting.  Teleworking options are available during the Covid19 pandemic, otherwise work is typically performed at the Natural Resource Building in Olympia, WA.
    • Work is performed in the field 5% – 20% of the time, depending on the season.  When in the field, activities could involve exposure to inclement weather, insect bites/stings, thorny/spiny vegetation and pollen.
    • Must have the ability to follow all Covid-19 plan protocols.
  • Schedule & Travel:
    • Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
    • Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
    • Occasional travel is expected.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in wildlife, wildlife habitat science, biology, zoology or in mathematics with emphasis on animal population biology, ecology, or closely allied field.

     AND

  • Four years of professional experience designing, conducting and supervising multidisciplinary wildlife, habitat or fish-related research studies.

     AND

          Working knowledge of:

  • Advanced knowledge of traditional statistics and ability to maintain expertise with new approaches.
  • Advanced knowledge of aquatic habitats and aquatic vertebrate ecology.
  • Ability to apply GIS-based models and new methodological approaches to collect and analyze data.
  • Ability to develop aquatic habitat, fish, amphibian, and reptile habitat models.
  • Ability to effectively communicate scientific information to policy makers, the public, and scientific audiences.
  • Experience supervising multiple staff.

          Publications:

  • Two articles published in peer reviewed literature – at least one of the articles as senior author; the second article must be as senior or secondary author.

          Licenses:

  • Valid Washington State or other State Driver’s License.

Six or more years of professional experience in wildlife, wildlife habitat science, biology, zoology or in mathematics with emphasis on animal population biology, ecology, or closely allied field may substitute for the education and professional experience requirement.
OR
Three years of experience as a Fish and Wildlife Research Scientist 1 will substitute for the four years of required professional experience, this option requires a Master’s degree as noted above.
OR
A Doctoral degree in one of the above fields of study will substitute for one year of the required professional experience.

All the above require experience in the working knowledge outlined.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD. in ecology, biology, or closely related field.
  • Three years of experience with research and implementation of studies addressing aquatic habitats and biota.
  • Five years of experience with research and implementation of studies addressing aquatic habitats and associated biota (e.g., fish, amphibian ecology and their management).
  • Five peer-reviewed publications addressing aquatic habitat/biota and management in which you were a primary or substantive contributor to the work.
  • Two years of experience developing adaptive management science with multi-stakeholder groups.
  • Experience successfully obtaining funding from granting entities.
  • Ability to write grants and successfully compete for research money.
