Job Description

This position will provide molecular biology support for a number of bioimaging projects within EMSL. All three projects require the production of various proteins on-demand using cell-free expression, culture and plasmid maintainance, and whole cell imaging using automated confocal microscopy.

This position is responsible for:

  • Providing essential research-related services utilizing cell-free expression, affinity tag purification, and size exclusion chromatography to produce and purify proteins on-demand.

  • Maintaining cell cultures and plasmid midi-preps.

  • Assisting in the day-to-day running of the molecular biology/biochemistry wet lab and general lab maintenance.

  • Applying molecular biology good practices to well defined tasks with minimal oversight.

  • Working as an individual but building and maintaining effective internal relationships on team level

  • Reporting results on time and on budget, while working under guidance from experienced staff.

  • Taking initiative to set personal direction and goals.

  • Conducting work with a high standard of quality, safety, and security.

  • Contributing to peer-revied publications as first or middle author.

  • Maintaining a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature

  • Managing time effectively to allow efficient multi-tasking

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience or MS/MA with 0-1 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS/MA in molecular biology, general biology, environmental science, or other related field.

  • Demonstrated experience planning and working independently to complete projects.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.

  • Computer skills, including word processing, web searching, database entry, spreadsheet and/or database creation.

  • Able to work under pressure of deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities.

  • Research experience in structural biology

  • 2+ years experience with wheat germ cell-free expression and 1-step purification

  • 2+ years experience operating automated protein synthesizer equipment

  • 2+ years experience with automated confocal microscopy using Leica microscopes
