Job ID: 311223

Directorate: Earth & Biological Sciences

Division: Atmospheric Sciences & Global Change

Group: Earth System Analysis & Modeling

Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a research scientist that will discover new scientific insights into processes coupling the land surface and the atmosphere as well as how those processes influence the boundary layer and lifecycle of convective clouds. The ability to analyze large observational (long-term monitoring or short-term field campaign) and model (LES, regional-scale, global climate) datasets and to pose hypotheses that tease out new insights is critical. The candidate is expected to approach the problem using measurements, modeling, or a combination of both. An understanding of how complex terrain perturbs land-atmosphere-cloud interactions and knowledge of the relationships used by land-surface and boundary-layer parameterizations in regional or climate models and the ability to modify parameterizations is desirable. The candidate will lead a team of scientists at PNNL and collaborate with other national labs as well as universities on topics of common interest.

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with a team of earth system modelers, atmospheric scientists, ecologists and hydrologists at PNNL and other DOE national laboratories and universities.

When applying please include the following in a single document:

  • Cover letter describing your research experience and interests;

  • Curriculum vitae with list of publications in refereed journals;

  • Names and addresses of three references.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level 2: Leads specific tasks of the project to meet scope, schedule and budget. Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. Contributes technical content to proposals and develops business through excellent project performance.

Level 3: Manages small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training. Generates ideas for new proposals and participates in business development activities

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience.

  • PhD in earth, atmospheric, environmental, geological, hydrological sciences or other related field with 2+ years’ experience. Preference will be given to those with both atmospheric science background and applied mathematics training.

  • Experience in running and revising codes of atmospheric general circulations models (e.g., EAM, CAM, WRF) in high-performance computing environments.

  • Demonstrated experience in land-atmosphere-cloud interactions research.

  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing large observational and model datasets.

  • Knowledge of measurement uncertainties and different types of model errors.

  • Fluency in Fortran and Python/shell scripting; demonstrated ability to write clean and flexible codes and scripts.

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

  • Experience in writing successful proposals.

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.
