Job Announcement – Food Security Program Coordinator

We are seeking to fill a Food Security Program Coordinator position to join the Community Services Team. This position will report to the Food and Nutrition Program Manager. The Food Security Program Coordinator will be responsible for building a community where people have homes, students graduate, and families are financially stable. Under our priority of breaking the cycle of poverty, we are committed to ensuring children, especially children of color, have access to nutritious food.

Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, local leaders estimate that hunger in our community has tripled. Low-income families and families of color have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, and, are experiencing hunger at unprecedented rates. United Way of King County’s Fuel Your Future campaign partners with school districts and community partners to increase access to federal meal programs, including school breakfast, afterschool meals, and summer meals, as well as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

This role will lead school breakfast and nutrition strategies in partnership with school districts as well as coordinate strategy and activities to increase participation in Out of School Time meals programs and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Additionally, this role will directly supervise a team of AmeriCorps deployed to school districts and community partners to support food security activities.

The recruiting salary range is $62,500-$ 66,500 or DOE. This position is open until filled; first consideration will be given to applications received within two weeks of posting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Actively participate in efforts to reduce racial disparities and systems of oppression
• Supervise a team of AmeriCorps members serving with school districts and community agencies and effectively coach and direct efforts of national service members
• Coordinate partnership with multiple non-profit partners to expand food access within affordable housing communities, including mobilizing resources, monitoring program participation, and providing day-to-day troubleshooting support
• Lead United Way Breakfast After the Bell efforts with school district leadership and nutrition services staff to guide implementation of Breakfast After the Bell in 390 schools across Washington State
• Coordinate United Way Summer Meals campaign, including developing strategies to increase summer meals participation, maintaining relationships with Summer Meals partners, and leveraging resources to implement the program
• Hire, deploy, and coordinate orientation of 100 AmeriCorps Summer Associates in compliance with AmeriCorps VISTA guidelines
• Develop and maintain strong technical knowledge related to Breakfast After the Bell legislation, the Community Eligibility Provision, federal child nutrition programs, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
• Collect, monitor, and analyze programmatic data to inform strategy and deployment of resources
• Synthesize and communicate information about on the groundwork, including documentation, storytelling, and creating high quality briefings
• Support Washington Service Corps grant compliance, including adhering to reporting requirements, tracking timesheets and other documentation, and navigating broader AmeriCorps polices
• Manage Washington Breakfast website, email account, and related social media accounts
• Lead in the identification and implementation of volunteer activities across program sites to engage one time and ongoing volunteers
• Provide support to program leadership and participate in fundraising, advocacy, data analysis, research, and building regional and national partnerships

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training or experience is required. Must have two years’ experience in project/program coordination, administration, project management, volunteer coordination or another relevant field. Prior experience working with federal Child Nutrition programs and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) preferable. Experience working with AmeriCorps members and within the K-12 school system helpful, but not required.  Supervisory experience required.  Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Ability to speak a second language is a plus.

• Intermediate level proficiency in MS Office and MS Excel
• Proven ability to multi-task; effective time and project management skills; able to independently plan projects from inception to execution
• Ability to navigate complex relationships, work within bureaucratic systems, and identify nuanced opportunities to move projects forward
• Knowledge of racial equity, determinants of poverty, and social justice frameworks
• Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities

JOB CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Position works under constant time requirements/constraints. Work is generally performed in an office environment with some evenings and weekends.  Requires the ability to travel to a variety of locations throughout King County.  However, during COVID-19, most activities will be performed virtually. Position has on-call status during tax season.

Job involves a moderate degree of complexity or difficulty based on handling and prioritizing the many tasks of position responsibilities.  Position is supervised by the Program Manager.  Position may participate in budgetary preparation/compliance accountability.  Decisions are sometimes made by a group process format and sometimes on an independent basis.  Decisions are made within general organizational policy constraints.

Physical activities include standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, handling, and using repetitive motions of hands/wrists.  Position may require lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
