Soils Data

This is the page for our belowground soil and carbon work in the EEON. Check back for updates, and see our belowground ecology blog from the field and ecosystem ecology lab at: http://sites.evergreen.edu/ecology/belowground-ecology/

Our lab uses multiple methods to understand variation in below ground processes in response to tree diversity. We have examined C flux below ground using scanner-based minirhizotron technology (CI-600), IRGA technology, estimation of total below ground carbon allocation, root excavation, and  nitrogen mineralization and microbial community techniques. The CI-600 is a scanner based technology which takes large underground images (21.59 x 19.56 cm) in buried 6.99 cm diam. acrylic tubes. Our fine root production estimates have used this technology in the EEON project since 2007. Soils data linked here represents carbon and nitrogen analysis using a Perkin-Elmer 2400 elemental analyzer or combustion methods (depending on dataset). Bulk density and root mass data come from gravimetric analyses of soils and roots. Roots were separated using a hydro pneumatic elutriator method. Soil CO2 efflux data comes from a mobile LC-Pro+ IRGA analyzer (ADC). Data is available here for select years, but you can contact us for more recent data and images.
