Evans Library ‘Library of Things’ – Eco Kits Expansion
Create and promote new items for the library’s environmental check-out kits such as forest bingo cards, scavenger hunts, and bird-watching kits. This might include researching examples from other institutions as well as designing original Evergreen materials.

Plan for MESA Nature Walks
Develop a plan for casual summer nature walks with an ecological focus, hosted by the Masters of Environmental Studies Association. It might include optional topics for discussion, bingo cards, or nature kits.

Eddy Covariance Clock Tower Monitoring Project
Assist with data management and communications for the Eddy Covariance project measuring forest carbon flux from the clock tower. Outreach might include signage for the community and data visualization.

Bulkhead Removal Ecological Restoration Studies & Monitoring
Planning and implementing an institutional plan for sustaining monitoring of the ecological effects of the removal of the bulkhead on the campus beach and its replacement with natural soft armoring.

Land Stewardship Team
Form a Land Stewardship Committee to guide the sustainable use and management of undeveloped campus land, establishing formal policies addressing environmental, cultural, and recreational impacts,  and supporting community engagement. The college currently faces challenges in managing the undeveloped  two-thirds of the campus, including its forests, wetlands, and beach areas. Historical usage without comprehensive management plans has led to environmental and recreational impacts that require immediate attention to prevent further degradation. The Committee would include faculty  with expertise in ecology, staff from the Climate Center, student representatives, and participants from Facilities and the Tribal Liaison Office. It would:

  • 1) Categorize land areas in the campus reserves and establish clear guidelines on permissible activities in them, aiming to minimize ecological impact while maximizing educational and recreational benefits.
  • 2) Engage with the campus community and external stakeholders, including local tribes and environmental groups, to foster a collaborative approach to land stewardship.
  • 3) Establish a framework for ongoing monitoring of land use and the effectiveness of implemented policies, with annual reporting to ensure transparency and accountability.

Restoration Plan for the Back Lot Dirt Mounds
Assess, plan, and potentially implement a native habitat restoration project in the dirt mound area behind Evans Hall, including ecological monitoring, signage, and adaptive management strategies.
