Do you have a project that engages interdisciplinary and applied education for just and sustainable food systems or agricultural practices?  Have you completed one of Evergreen’s foundation programs (or the equivalent) in Ecological Agriculture, Food, Health and Sustainability, or Practice of Organic Farming and want to pursue a related project, either individually or in a small group?  Capstone Projects in Food and Agriculture will support students who are both willing and capable of collaboration with sponsoring faculty and staff to pursue individual or small group projects through on-farm internships, food related apprenticeships, field studies, research, or community-based service learning projects.  Whether on the campus organic farm, downtown, across the country, or across the world, students should expect to link theory with practice, activism with reflection, and critical thinking with multi-sensory, hands-on experience.

Capstone Projects in Food and Agriculture is ideal for self-motivated students with an interest in food and agriculture and a passion for transformative education, perhaps combining research with experiential learning or political action with community-based service learning.  This program also is ideal for students who have completed a food or agriculture-related program and want more real world, hands-on experience or who want to pursue a food-related passion with intensity in depth or breadth.  In addition to worldwide opportunities through organizations such as Willing Workers on Organic Farms and Slow Food International, national conferences such as EcoFarm, The Heirloom Expo, and The Biodynamic Conference, the Olympia area has many farm, food, gastronomic, and agriculture related opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, field studies, research or community-based service learning projects.  On campus the development of a permanent Farm Stand, CSA, and pizza oven at The Evergreen State College farm may provide unique opportunities for students to engage with edible education in relation to our own campus food system.  Other on-campus opportunities related to food justice, taste, and sustainability include the Food Systems Working Group, the Real Food Challenge, and Student Activities sponsored student groups you could create or existing groups such as Demeter’s Permaculture Garden, the Community Garden, and Shellfish Club.
