Amber – Wednesday

Rainbow around the sun. Paul and I were convinced the world was ending until Brian told us that this was actually a thing. Definitely among the coolest things I’ve seen on this trip.

Walked a short 8k into Ponferrada and took a much needed rest day in the city. This city is surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains I have ever seen. I am so in awe of this place.

Kind of getting to that point where I’m ready to be done walking, which is a little worrisome considering we still have a pretty decent amount of time left. I’m hoping that after an easy day and good night’s sleep I’ll get back into the groove tomorrow. Until then, Paul and I are going to eat our weight in strawberries and chocolate ice cream. Cheers!

Today was about as perfect as it could have possibly been. It was about 70 degrees, sunny, and the scenery was crazy beautiful. We literally just got to walk through mountains the entire day. It was awesome.

Tomorrow might be an easy day for me because I am getting sick, but we’ll see what happens. Only a little over 200km left. I can’t believe how fast it has all gone.

“Introduction; Nothingness” by Hayden Calnin

If you are aware of a state which you call is,
Or reality,
Or life,
This implies another state called isn’t,
Or illusion or unreality,
Or nothingness,
Or death.
There it is-
You can’t have one without the other.
And so as to make life poignant,
It’s always going to come to an end.
That is exactly, don’t you see, what makes it lively.
Liveliness is change, it’s motion.
So, you see, you’re always at the place where you always are.
And you think, ‘wowie, little further on and we’ll get there. I hope that we don’t go further down so that we lose what we already have.’
But that is built into every creature’s situation,
No matter how high,
No matter how low.
So, in this sense all places are the same place,
And the only time you ever notice any difference is in the moment of transition.
When you go up a bit, you gain.
When you go down a bit, you feel disappointed, gloomy, lost.
You can go all the way down to death.
Somehow, there seems to be a difficulty in getting all the way up.
Death seems so final,
Nothingness seems so very, very irrevocable and permanent.
But then if it is, what about the nothingness that was before you started?
On the contrary, it takes nothing to have something,
‘Cause you wouldn’t know what something was without nothing.
You wouldn’t be able to see anything, unless there was nothing behind your eyes.
The most real state is the state of nothing.
That’s what it’s going to all come to.

This is one of my very favorite songs. Makes ya think.

León Cathedral

León Cathedral

Arrived in León Wednesday night and met up with some more classmates. Spent yesterday hanging out in the city and taking today to explore around some more. Having a wonderful time with wonderful people. Over halfway to Santiago…

Amber – Sunday

Foggy 35k into Carrion de los Condes, and we ran into more people! The woman showed us our beds and Karen and Rachel were just chilling on their beds, and Hunter was downstairs making food. It was such a good surprise. We also met up with Aaron, Jackson, Evan and Cecelia at the bar and caught up and ate dinner together. I seriously get so happy when I see people I know. It’s just like this huge rush of and comfort and joy and holy-shit-we’re-all-in-Spain-together type of thing, y’know? These guys are so happy and light-hearted and just really awesome to be around. Super pumped to walk with them tomorrow.
