TCAT: Keeping the Lights on with Clean Energy!
TCAT: Keeping the Lights on with Clean Energy!
April 28, 2026 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Soul Cafe, 300 5th Ave SW, Olympia, WA 98501, USA
Join us for TCAT's monthly Climate Catalyst Speaker Series. In April TCAT is proud to present environmental economist and TCAT Volunteer Jim Lazar, as our guest. Jim is the author of of several books on energy policy and regulation including: Teaching the Duck to Fly, published in 2014, a bellwether publication about the opportunities to integrate wind, solar, hydro, load flexibility, energy storage, and inter-regional connections to achieve a cleaner power grid. He also authored Electricity Regulation in the US: A Guide, and many smaller publications.
The nay-sayers say we can't supply all our growing energy needs with clean energy so we must resort to dirty fossil fuels. The Washington Clean Energy Transformation Act calls for a net-zero electric power system by 2030, and a true zero-carbon system by 2045. Jim will prove the nay-sayers wrong and show how Washington state can easily meet those deadlines.
Declining costs for wind, solar, and battery storage, together with improved technologies for load flexibility, are changing the power sector. These changes create an opportunity for the region to eliminate its reliance on polluting power sources, including coal, natural gas, and even nuclear power, with huge economic benefits for the region. This will be relatively easy in the Pacific Northwest due to the energy storage capacity of our hydroelectric dams, the largest “battery” in the United States.
Bring your clean energy questions!
This event is free and open to the public. Snacks will be provided. Please bring your own nonalcoholic beverage.
