As with\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/vms-spring\/\">Spring\u00a0Quarter 2016 VMS Monograph Project<\/a>, the\u00a0goals of this assignment\u00a0were\u00a0for students\u00a0to integrate their\u00a0learning about marine micro-organisms with observational and representational skills they are\u00a0developing in writing, drawing and animation. The project also provided opportunities for students to share their\u00a0learning with classmates and others in the broader community, and gain skills in collaboration and using digital tools to present creative and scientific work. Students collaborated on different ways to categorize their organisms according to ecological and symbolic relationships that you will find in the menu headings. \u00a0We invite you to explore this site and learn about the remarkable diversity of marine microbial life and the ecological interactions among these organisms that our students have examined.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_584\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/vms\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/11\/barnaclefinal2.gif\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-584\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-584 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/vms\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/11\/barnaclefinal2.gif\" alt=\"barnaclefinal\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">zoetrope strip animation of barnacle larva<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/catalog\/2015-16\/programs\/visualizingmicrobialseascapesanintroductiontoanimationandmarinebiology-12387\" target=\"_blank\">Visualizing Microbial Seascapes: An Introduction to Animation and Marine Biology<\/a> is an Evergreen program in the 2015-16 academic year that\u00a0examines marine environments and life from the perspectives of science and the visual and media arts, emphasizing animation. Marine life constitutes a majority of the biomass and diversity of life, and marine microorganisms play major, complex roles in global ecological processes. We focus on these relationships and how human activity affects them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the past century, humans have severely impacted Earth\u2019s ecosystems, degrading habitats and over-exploiting natural resources. Some scientists have termed this period of human influence the Anthropocene.\u00a0In the program we explore ways that science and art can increase understanding of natural phenomena and human impacts on them, contributing effectively to solving environmental problems such as those that have caused\u00a0the Anthropocene.\u00a0We study\u00a0how artists and marine scientists use close observation, analysis, and integrative thinking to communicate important concepts and values. We experiment with ways to represent the movements, behaviors, and functions of microorganisms, as well as the larger structures of marine environments.
