{"id":379,"date":"2016-06-21T00:14:38","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T07:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/townhalls\/?page_id=379"},"modified":"2016-07-13T13:45:29","modified_gmt":"2016-07-13T20:45:29","slug":"inequality-and-food","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/townhalls\/inequality-town-hall-events\/inequality-and-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Inequality and Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Winter Quarter 2015 Event:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Food Systems Inequality Town Hall<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 700px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><em>Inequality: Town Halls for Educational Innovation<\/em>, a two year project funded by the Evergreen Fund for Innovation, is designed to bring together a wide range of students, staff, faculty and members of the Olympia community to hold ongoing forums on the unprecedented rise in income and wealth inequality that characterizes U.S. society. \u00a0The focus of this quarter\u2019s activity is on inequality in the food system, and is being organized by students and faculty in the academic program\u00a0<em>Food: Coevolution, Community and Sustainability<\/em>. Our goals are to build on the success of last quarter\u2019s Town Hall on the topic of student debt, and to facilitate conversations and the identification of solutions to address food system inequality at the campus, community, national and global levels.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 350px\">\n<h6>Event Series:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Food Justice Film Series and Discussion Featuring- <em>Food Chains, A Place at the Table, <\/em>and <em>Fed Up<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Student Research Poster Presentation hosted by the Food: Coevolution, Community, and Sustainability Program<\/li>\n<li>World Caf\u00e9 Discussion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-386 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/townhalls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/06\/beans.jpg\" alt=\"beans\" width=\"286\" height=\"176\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 350px\" colspan=\"2\">\u00a0Discussion Questions included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How have you experience or witnessed food inequality in your life?<\/li>\n<li>Why does society tolerate food system inequality?<\/li>\n<li>As an individual, what power do you have to address food system inequality? Projects included issues of food access due to transportation, food costs and income disparities; community projects such as gardens and food hubs that stimulate food security and positive community connections; issues of the international and global food injustices including export\/import practices and trade agreements.<\/p>\n<p>The World Cafe Discussion was lively and meaningful. There was ample time spent with each prepared question and a rotation among participants that provide unique insights and varied perspectives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>&#8220;Prior to attending this event I didn&#8217;t understand the depth and breadth of inequalities within our food system.
