LUNCH WILL USUALLY BE A SANDWICH\/SALAD BAR. WE WILL PROVIDE ZIPLOCKS BUT YOU MAY WANT TO BRING A CONTAINER TO PUT LUNCH FOODS IN, ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIKE THE &#8216;DINNER SALAD&#8217; CONCEPT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Active Note Taking<\/strong>: This is an extended academic field study. You are in &#8216;school&#8217; everyday of the trip and are required to take notes at all stops and summarize key learning events in a field notebook. Faculty will review your notebook as part of assigning credit and writing evaluations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Video Assignment: <\/strong>Use field experiences to record video for your Savoring Terroir film assignment. Be sensitive to recording people that you do not have permission from. You are responsible for downloading and storing your video files. Melanie suggested bringing your own camera memory cards as a good option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smoking:<\/strong> All vans and hotel rooms are smoke free, and California has laws regulating public smoking. Smokers, please be sensitive to the smoke odor brought into vans and rooms on clothes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation and Packing:<\/strong> Plan on being outside in cold, rainy weather &#8211; bring rain gear! Each year some students ignore this warning and are miserable. Bring a small day pack for your field notebook, camera\/video equipment, personal items, water bottle and daily food.\u00a0 Pack a small second bag with clothes and an extra pare of shoes or sandals &#8211; one will get wet.\u00a0 Laundromats are very close to the hotel in Santa Cruz and in other towns.<\/p>\n<p>Hope for sun, expect rain. Yet, bring hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lodging:<\/strong> will be in hotels, generally with 4 students sharing a room that has 2 double beds. Students often prefer to bring a sleeping bag to sleep on the bed. Students self-select roommates and are encouraged to network in advance to find roommates with similar sleeping and activity patterns. Hotels have wifi. Hotels have <strong>quiet hours<\/strong> enforced by the management. Anybody disrupting the learning environment of the group will be sent back to Olympia at their own expense.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food:<\/strong> Students will be paying some meal costs out of pocket, plan ahead! Access to food is a human right and if anyone finds themselves out of food and money please ask faculty for assistance. Students should also decide if a portion of the food budget should go towards a food pantry to help defray costs for anyone unable to buy food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1 (Jan. 19th)<\/strong> students should bring their own breakfast and lunch foods for the long van ride.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breakfasts:<\/strong> The hotels provide continental breakfast, other breakfast items are considered personal expenses not covered by the field trip fee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lunches:<\/strong> lunch food covered by student fees are in the form of a sandwich\/snack bar that is set up at breakfast time or at a designated picnic site. This may include tastings of regional, terroir-laden foods.\u00a0 Every evening the lunch plan for the next day will be announced. Other lunch items are considered personal expenses. Day 6 (Sunday, Jan 24) will be lunch on your own while exploring the terroir-laden foods of San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dinners:<\/strong>\u00a0 Field trip fees will cover 2 dinners that we will prepare together. All other dinners are a personal expense not covered by field trip fees. Some of the hotels have kitchenettes in the rooms to cook food. These rooms do not have pots, pans or utensils. We also don&#8217;t have lots of extra van space to carry kitchen supplies so plan in advance with classmates around this. Other hotels should have refrigerators and microwaves in the rooms as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Behavior and Conflict Resolution: <\/strong>The program Covenant governs our individual and collective behavior on the trip. Experience makes us believe that minor conflicts will arise on the trip. Using direct, non-violent communication to address issues is a powerful technique and learning experience.
