{"id":88,"date":"2012-07-23T16:17:42","date_gmt":"2012-07-23T23:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.evergreen.edu\/nivas\/?page_id=60"},"modified":"2016-01-29T12:58:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T20:58:35","slug":"study-abroad","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/steveniva\/study-abroad\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Abroad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/steveniva\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/2012\/07\/istanbul-bosphorus-cruise-sightseeing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-65\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/steveniva\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/2012\/07\/istanbul-bosphorus-cruise-sightseeing-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/strong> <strong>Middle East Studies in Context:\u00a0 Study Abroad Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About every three years, I take students on a 6 week study abroad program to Turkey and Egypt in the Spring quarter as the final quarter of a three quarter thematic program dealing with Middle Eastern topics.\u00a0 I took a group to Egypt and Turkey in 2014.\u00a0 The 2011 trip to Turkey was the fourth trip I have led to the region.\u00a0 The picture on the lower right side of this page was taken from our visit to a Mehane (Turkish Tavern) in the Nevizade district\u00a0 near Istaqlal Street in Istanbul in\u00a02011.\u00a0 The picture on the lower left is from Cairo&#8217;s Khan al-Khalili market area in Islamic Cairo.<\/p>\n<p>The study abroad component is an integrated element of a three quarter thematic program on a selected topic in Middle East studies devised by the faculty team teaching the program that year.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the limited space for the study abroad program students must<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have been enrolled in the previous two quarters of study<\/li>\n<li>be selected according to criteria worked out between students and faculty at the start of the program in the Fall quarter.\u00a0 For example, in 2011 41 students sought 30 places for the study abroad.\u00a0 When one faculty leads the study abroad, there are typically only 23 slots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Examples of Previous Study Abroad Programs to Middle East that I lead:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2011:\u00a0 Memory and Conflict in the Eastern Mediterranean<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>40 day trip to Turkey.\u00a0 10 days in two different districts of Istanbul (Sultanahmet and Taksim);
