{"id":63,"date":"2019-04-24T16:19:03","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T23:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ruthhayes\/?page_id=63"},"modified":"2021-10-07T21:53:23","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T04:53:23","slug":"pre-cinema-animation-in-the-post-cinema-age","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ruthhayes\/pre-cinema-animation-in-the-post-cinema-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Pre-Cinema Animation in the Post Cinema Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my own creative work, I\u2019ve produced <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ruthhayes\/pre-cinema-animation-in-the-post-cinema-age\/simple-machine-synergies\/\">flipbooks, zoetrope strips<\/a> and praxinoscope disks as a way to generate images and ideas.\u00a0 But these and other pre-cinema approaches are also really great teaching tools.\u00a0 They are a low stakes way to try out ideas and learn basic animation principles.\u00a0 As objects, they are in some ways more accessible than single channel linear animated film or video.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_93\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-93 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ruthhayes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/465\/2019\/04\/PraxWebKarlee-300x207-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-93\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turntable Praxinoscope with Intaglio Disk by Karlee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Drawing Outside the Lines, my co-faculty, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.evergreen.edu\/sweetl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lisa Sweet<\/a>, and I asked students to combine two antiquated technologies in their image-making by creating copperplate etched disks for praxinoscopes they made from repurposed record turntables.<\/p>\n<p>After workshops in creating disks, drawing 6 frame animation cycles and repurposing turntables, the students executed the following assignments:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\">Praxinoscope I (aka, half-moon)<\/h2>\n<p>Assigned:\u00a0 Mon., week 1<br \/>\nDrawing\/mock-up due Thurs., week 2 in critique<\/p>\n<p>Between week 2 and Tues. week 7, develop an intaglio plate, make 10 impressions in variety of \u2018state print\u2019 half-moon praxinoscopes on full size paper (i.e. paper that will accommodate a complete sphere praxinoscope image) employing a wide range of colors, values, transparencies in your use of ink.
