{"id":17,"date":"2021-03-15T14:45:18","date_gmt":"2021-03-15T21:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/lighttest\/?page_id=17"},"modified":"2024-03-18T19:15:30","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T02:15:30","slug":"welcome","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/removingbarriers\/","title":{"rendered":"Removing Barriers: Restoring Salmon Watersheds through Tribal Alliances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By students of &#8220;Conceptualizing Place: Pacific Northwest Native Art and Geographies&#8221; (Alexander McCarty and Zolt\u00e1n Grossman, faculty) at The Evergreen State College, Olympia WA (Winter 2021<\/em><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-194\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/removingbarriers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/609\/2022\/03\/CoverDraftDublin-230x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"340\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Fall 2020 &#8211; Winter 2021, students in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/removingbarriers\/conceptualizing-place\/\">Conceptualizing Place: Pacific Northwest Native Art and Geographies\u201d<\/a> daytime program at The Evergreen State College produced a 132-page publication about barriers to salmon runs, notably dams, dikes, and culverts, and how tribal nations have led alliances to remove some of the barriers in order to restore salmon habitat in Northwest watersheds.<\/p>\n<p>The place-based stories of habitat restoration highlight how treaty rights and tribal sovereignty have become leading drivers of reversing damage wrought by settler colonialism, and how the healing of the watersheds and their estuaries is made possible by a process of decolonization and reindigenization in corresponding Indigenous homelands.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/removingbarriers\"><strong><em>Removing Barriers: Restoring Salmon Watersheds through Tribal Alliances<\/em>,<\/strong><\/a> narratives of the watersheds are told through text, graphics, and students&#8217; 42 original digital artworks and maps, as students simultaneously learned Northwest Native histories, geographies, and art styles.<\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s theme of \u201cremoving barriers\u201d applies to the barriers to salmon runs, barriers between human beings and the natural world, barriers between Native and non-Native communities, and barriers to Indigenous self-determination.<\/p>\n<p>Students&#8217; twelve chapters highlighted the Nisqually, Elwha, Skokomish, Chico, White Salmon, Nooksack, White, Deschutes, Chehalis, Klamath, and Snake watersheds, as well as background on dams and climate change, and their effects on Pacific salmon, orcas, and coastal communities <em>(see Contents below for links to two parts).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The publication is an example what what Evergreen students can accomplish in interdisciplinary, team-taught programs. Under the remote supervision of faculty (artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexmccarty.org\">Alexander McCarty<\/a> and geographer \/ cartographer <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/zoltan\">Zolt\u00e1n Grossman<\/a>), individual students produced Adobe Illustrator artwork and maps in fall quarter 2020, and student teams produced the Adobe InDesign layouts in winter quarter 2021.
