Lecture slides for tomorrow and a few words about tomorrow’s botany quiz and morning schedule
Dear students. Here you will find the slides for tomorrow’s photosynthesis and seedless vascular plant lectures.
For tomorrow’s botany quiz, be sure to review the life cycles handout from last week as well as lecture slides on bryophytes. Your study questions from the bryophyte lab will also help you to prepare. It’s important that you focus on getting down your understanding of terminology to describe plant life cycles (such as haploid, diploid, gametophyte, sporophyte, meoisis, fertilization) and spend time working with life cycle diagrams for each group of land plants this quarter.
Tomorrow we have a packed morning including:
- Quiz 3- Bryophytes
- Innovators presentations
- Lecture on photosynthesis/seedless vascular plants
We were hoping to get out early ~11:30 so that we can regroup at 12:30 for a plant walk on the Evergreen Beach trail meeting at the trailhead in F lot. Our plant walk will end at 1:30 and we will meet in the CAL at 2pm for video analysis work with Krishna!
Enjoy this amazing spring weather!
updated program schedule
Dear students. Here is our tentative program schedule, complete with class meetings, due dates and readings. Have a great weekend!
Week 4 Reading and Schedule
For Week 4, please read:
- Biology of Plants: Ch. 7, Ch. 17
- College Physics: Ch 24.3, 27
- Life of a Leaf: Ch. 2 (read as part of physics reading)
Week 4 Schedule:
- due by 5 pm, Mon. April 18 via your Group Project Blog: Project Proposal
- due by 6 pm, Mon. April 18 via WebAssign: Physics Problem Set 3.
- due by 9 am, Tue. April 18 in class: Project Forms
- 9 am, Tue. April 19. Sem 2 B1105: Botany Quiz; Botany Lecture.
- 12:30 pm, Tue. April 19. Plant Walk – meet at F Lot trail: bring field notebooks and dress for weather. On completion, meet in CAL West.
- 9 am, Wed. April 20. Lab 1 2046: Physics Quiz; Physics Lecture.
- 9 am, Thu. April 21. Lab 1 1040: Botany Lab; Physics Lab
- 9 am, Fri. April 22. Sem 2 B1107: Physics Workshop (attempt all of Physics Problem Set 4 problems in your Problem Set Notebook before workshop); Weekly Wrap.
Group Project Proposals due Mon. April 18 by 5pm
As noted in the Project Timeline: “Due Week 4 Monday April 18 by 5pm: Group Project Proposal posted to program website. Follows Guidelines for your group research project blog post as much as possible given early stage of project.”
Fill in the following sections as best you can. For sections that you can’t complete, anticipate as best you can what you will include (e.g. in the Results section, include what you might plan to video, what kinds of graphs you might produce, etc.). Review the Project Guidelines for details.
- The names of all group members
- A project title
- A short summary of your project
- Introduction/Project Background
- Methods
- Results
- References
Life of a Leaf reading assignments
Please update your syllabus to include the following readings from Life of a Leaf (LoaL). These readings should be considered as part of the physics reading for the week, and should be completed by that week’s physics lecture.
- Week 3: Chapter 1 (for Friday Wrap)
- Week 4: Chapter 2
- Week 5: Chapters 3 – 6
- Week 6: Chapters 11-12
- Week 7: —
- Week 8: TBD
- Week 9: TBD
Video Analysis Workshop handout
Here’s a copy of the Video Analysis Workshop. No need to print out your own copy; I will provide you with one during workshop.
Physics Lecture #3 – Motion in a Straight Line: 1 Dimensional Kinematics
Here are slides from the Week 3 Physics Lectures.
Physics Problem Set 3 available
- You can download a printable version of Physics Problem Set 3 (due Mon. April 18 at 6 pm via WebAssign) here. You can also see the Problem Set on WebAssign directly.
- Prepare for Physics Workshop on Fri. Apr. 15 by attempting as many of the problems as you can before workshop time.
- This material should be familiar to most physics tutors. There are experienced tutors available on Wednesday afternoon from 1 – 6, and many of the physics students in the QuaSR on Wednesday afternoon should also be familiar (though perhaps rusty) with this material. Most people are likely to use algebraic methods to solve the problems – please remember that graphical methods are just as useful.
Physics Problem Set 2 solutions
- You can find solutions to Physics Problem Set 2 here.
- A number of students contacted me because they struggled with the assignment. There were several challenging problems on this problem set, so it’s ok that there were difficulties. I will be available over the lunch break on Tue. April 12 to go over questions with students who are interested.
