Gallery Photoland is pleased to welcome you to visit our latest exhibition, <\/span>trying (a respite in-between)<\/span><\/i> a solo show of recent photographic works by Midwest-based artist Jesse Ly. Ly\u2019s work is concerned with the dualities, similarities, and tensions between care and labor. The work makes time for concerns related to setting affirmations, safe keeping, protection, and preparedness \u2013 while acknowledging variance, shifts, amenability and impermanence. The photographs call for consideration of ways that one may harness the needed firmness to advocate for change with the leniency and care needed to hold space for compassion.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A respite in-between<\/span><\/i> \u2013 a call to halt to keep steady what we can amongst the continued turbulence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Artist:\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesse Ly is an Asian-American photographic and image-based artist. They hold a bachelor\u2019s degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History and a certificate in Critical Visions from the University of Cincinnati\u2019s college of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). They are currently the Graphic Design and Photography Media Facilities Coordinator for Art & Design at the University of Dayton.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They have exhibited work both nationally and internationally. A selection of solo and two person exhibitions include <\/span>Image Interference<\/span><\/i> at Basketshop Gallery – Cincinnati, OH, <\/span>Support Systems <\/span><\/i>at SHAG (Stone House Art Gallery) – Charlotte, NC and <\/span>please remember this…<\/span><\/i> at The Neon Heater – Findlay, OH. Notable group exhibitions include <\/span>Wild Frictions The Politics and Poetics of Interruption<\/span><\/i> at The Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati, <\/span>Auto\/\/Update<\/span><\/i> at the Carnegie Arts Center – Covington, KY, and <\/span>I Don\u2019t Know How To Respond To That<\/span><\/i> at the PhMuseum – Bologna, Italy. They are a recipient of two Culture Works <\/span>Artist Opportunity Grants<\/span><\/i>, an <\/span>Individual Excellence Award<\/span><\/i> from the Ohio Arts Council, a <\/span>Regional Artist Renewal Grant <\/span><\/i>via the National Endowment for the Arts, and was recently named a finalist for the<\/span> Aperture Portfolio Prize<\/span><\/i> for 2023.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gallery Photoland is a non-traditional exhibition space that showcases established photographic artists who represent diverse experiences and world views. The Gallery functions to spark ideas and support connections across the Evergreen community; it is a place for inspiring students about possibilities in fine arts beyond the shores of Eld Inlet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
