{"id":424,"date":"2009-10-08T19:04:01","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T02:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.evergreen.edu\/bohmerp\/?p=424"},"modified":"2009-10-08T19:04:01","modified_gmt":"2009-10-09T02:04:01","slug":"lisa-sullivan-in-olympia-wed-sept-30th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/peterbohmer\/lisa-sullivan-in-olympia-wed-sept-30th\/","title":{"rendered":"The struggle in Honduras continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"message1670199210\">\n<div id=\"yiv1157545028\">\n<p>Lisa Sullivan, spoke in Olympia on\u00a0the current situation in Honduras and Venezuela and the growth of the left throughout Latin America on Wednesday, September 30<sup>th<\/sup> at 1:30 and 7 P.M.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the elected President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya is taking refuge in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras after returning  clandestinely to Honduras after being overthrown in a military coup. The U.S. right-wing is playing a major role in supporting this illegal coup. \u00a0 Lisa Sullivan in her talks pointed out the aim by the right-wing of Honduras to stay in power until the next scheduled elections in Honduras, November 28th. What is exciting and positive is the growth h of the popular movements in Honduras who in spite of serious repression are calling for  the return of Zelaya to the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Sullivan recently traveled to\u00a0Honduras with Fr. Joe Mulligan and\u00a0seven others to demand democracy be restored by reinstating the\u00a0elected President Zelaya who had\u00a0been ousted by a military coup.\u00a0Sullivan had just been to Honduras the month prior to the coup, asking\u00a0President Zelaya to stop sending his\u00a0troops to the School of the Americas\/\u00a0WHINSEC for training. Sullivan has\u00a0already met seven Latin American\u00a0Presidents making similar requests,\u00a0with some success. She married and moved to Bolivia to work among the poor as a lay Maryknoll community\u00a0worker. She raised her three children living and working among the poor in the barrios of Bolivia and\u00a0Venezuela.
