Over the last several decades, many campuses have created Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs)—and we use “faculty” in the broadest sense here to include adjuncts, student affairs staff, and others—in which educators work together to explore questions about their teaching and their students’ learning. Creating these kinds of communities can 1) promote collaboration, 2) encourage the use of evidence for improvement, and 3) recognize the scholarly work that goes into effective teaching. We will look at a model for designing an effective SoTL inquiry project, and at examples of how to organize this work on campus. The aim of the session is to reflect together on how SoTL FLCs can contribute to the action plan you’re working on at this Institute.

Handouts
PowerPoint
Turning your Scholarly Teaching into the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Gonzaga University Center for Teaching and Advising (CTA)
Creating a Culture of Inquiry
Iowa State University Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Scholars Program
Mount Royal University Institute for SoTL (2019)

Pat Hutchings (National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment) and Jen Leptien (Iowa State University) Sem II-B 1107 The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is work in which faculty bring their skills and habits of inquiry to their practice as …
