The 110,000 acre (445 km<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) area was set aside for research, recreation, and education. Mount Saint Helens erupted on May 18th, 1980, a deadly and hugely destructive event. Inside the monument, the environment has been left to respond naturally to the disturbance.
