She is the recipient of the E-3 Washington 2012 Green Apple Award for Excellence in Education (Higher Education) and the 2011 Nisqually River Council Spark Plug Award for extraordinary energy and dedication to the mission of the Nisqually River Council. She believes that combining visual art, science, and environmental education is a vehicle to win hearts and minds for ecological conservation. Lucia created the Native Plant Magic Book Series based upon her research and observations at Point Defiance Park (Tacoma), Titlow Park (Tacoma), Red Salmon Creek, Braget Marsh, the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and her own native plant gardens. She created the 16 line drawings and hand colored (using colored pencils) the 16 images in each magic book.\u00a0 Her artwork draws attention to the natural and human history of South Puget Sound in Washington State.<\/p>\n<p>The Magic Book Project was funded by the City of Tacoma Artists Initiative Program.<\/p>\n<p>Lucia is a founding board member of Puget Sound Book Artists.\u00a0 She has curated art exhibits at The University of Puget Sound and The Evergreen State College on science-related topics.\u00a0 Her work has been collected by The Evergreen State College Library Rare Book Room, Cleveland Institute of Arts.
