As the Director of The Evergreen State College Master of Public Administration (MPA) Program, I am delighted to reconnect with you and share some exciting news from our community.

However, on a personal note I would like to start this letter by thanking the staff and faculty of the MPA program, especially former Director Mike Craw. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your support and assistance during this transition. Your guidance and collaboration have made this process infinitely easier. I look forward to working closely with all of you to continue advancing our mission and serving our students

This year, we are proud to announce that Senator Jessica Bateman has been named The Evergreen State College Master of Public Administration (MPA) 2025 Public Official of the Year. Senator Bateman’s remarkable journey from a dedicated student at in the MPA program at Evergreen to a distinguished public servant exemplifies the values and mission of our program. Her tireless advocacy serves as an inspiration.

We also have some staffing changes to share this year. Our Assistant Director Puanani Nihoa retired in February. Puanani has served the college in multiple capacities during her tenure here. We are lucky Puanani chose to finish her time at Evergreen with the MPA program, spending 12 years supporting students in the Tacoma and Tribal Governance cohorts. Puanani has been an invaluable member of our community, contributing significantly to our mission and values. Her dedication, expertise, and passion for public service leave a lasting impact on all of us. While we will miss her presence, we are grateful for the legacy she leaves behind and wish her all the best in her retirement.

In turn, we are excited that Vicky Buford has stepped in as a part-time Assistant Director to help us as we recruit for our 4th Tacoma cohort. Vicky has been working in higher education for over 10 years and previously served as the Managing Director/Program Coordinator at The Evergreen State College Tacoma campus. Right now, Vicky is hard at work supporting Tacoma applicants through the second round, May 1st, and third round, July 1st, application deadlines.

As always, we remain grateful for your engagement with and support of Evergreen’s MPA program. If you have news to share or if you know someone who could be an excellent addition to our Fall 2025 cohort, please let us know at mpa@evergreen.edu. Also please consider joining us for upcoming events showcasing student research and providing an opportunity for networking. A Student Research Showcase with networking opportunities will take place May 31st. We also invite you to our Capstone presentations. Olympia Capstone presentations will take place on June 5th from 6 pm – 9 pm and June 7th from 9:30 am – 4 pm. Tacoma Capstone presentations will take place on June 7th from 9 am – 4 pm. Invitation will go out separately.

You, our alumni, play a huge role in the continued success of our MPA program. Thank you for your continued dedication to public service and for being an integral part of the Evergreen MPA family. Together, we can continue to make a difference and advocate powerfully on behalf of the public.

Best,

Meghan Doughty
Faculty and MPA Director
The Evergreen State College
Pronouns: She/her

Dear Friends and Alumni of Evergreen’s Master of Public Administration Program, We are coming to the end of the 2024-2025 academic year, a time of reflection and excitement!
