Evergreen\u2019s MPA program director, Mike Craw, represented the college at the Midwest Political Science Association\u2019s annual conference, held April 13-16 in Chicago. The conference brings together over 5000 faculty to share the latest research in political science, public administration, and related fields of study. During the conference, Dr. Craw presented findings from his work with Dr. Carolyn Weisz at the University of Puget Sound on racial equity in Pierce County\u2019s homelessness services system. Collaborating with county, city, homelessness nonprofits, and people with lived experience in homelessness in Pierce County, Dr.\u2019s Craw and Weisz designed and carried out interviews with sixteen Black families using homelessness services in Pierce County in 2021.\u00a0 The interview responses affirm the importance of cultivating trust between caseworkers and clients in providing homelessness services, particularly by improving cultural competency among providers. More generally, the results support approaches to homelessness service delivery that embrace principles of Targeted Universalism, which calls for tailoring strategies for addressing a problem like homelessness to the particular circumstances of groups that are most affected by the problem. Since the study was completed, Pierce County has used the results to encourage innovative partnerships between homelessness service providers with the aim of improving cultural competence.<\/p>\n
