The motto of our MPA program is “be the change.” Over the course of his career, Senator McCoy has fully embraced that motto. From his work in establishing the statewide Since Time Immemorial curriculum, to the foundational role he played in creating the Tribal Leaders Congress in Education, Senator McCoy has lead major initiatives to strengthen Native student education, at all levels. Indeed, Senator McCoy was instrumental in establishing the Tribal Governance concentration in our own MPA program, the ninth cohort of graduates of which we celebrate today.

In addition to these impressive accomplishments, Senator McCoy has personally shaped the education of many of Washington’s leaders as an adjunct faculty member in our MPA program and as the sponsor of numerous internship opportunities for MPA students. In his courses, Senator McCoy has provided the wisdom of experience that can only come from a skilled practitioner of governance and public administration. Senator McCoy truly has been, and continues to be, the change we hope to see in Washington and the world.

Senator McCoy, please accept our thanks and this award recognizing you as Evergreen MPA’s 2020 Public Official of the Year.
