Learn More About Conservation and Non-Profit Governance as a Board Fellow

Capitol Land Trust is accepting applications for a one-year position as a “Board Fellow” on the Capitol Land Trust Board of Directors. The individual selected will be a full voting member of the board. The purpose of this position is to broaden the range of voices setting policy for Capitol Land Trust and to provide an enrichment opportunity for a student interested in non-profit governance and natural resource conservation.

Capitol Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) organization focused on natural land conservation in the South Puget Sound and Chehalis Basin watersheds. Since 1987, Capitol Land Trust has conserved over 70 properties, 6,000 acres and 14 miles of Puget Sound shoreline. It has approximately 1,500 members, hundreds of volunteers, a paid staff of 10, and an operating budget approaching a million dollars.

We are seeking a current [2024-2025 academic year] graduate or undergraduate college student who is committed to conservation values and is interested in developing skills in non-profit governance. There are no academic discipline restrictions.

Capitol Land Trust will support structural requirements for course credit, when desired, in accordance with university procedures or in the case at The Evergreen State College, an Independent Learning Contract. The position starts in October of 2024.

The successful candidate will go through new board member training and will be mentored throughout the year by one or more board members. The board fellow will have the same commitments as other board members, including attendance at monthly board meetings, at least one committee membership, fundraising efforts, and being a volunteer land steward at one of our sites.

Minimum total time commitment is around 8-10 hours a month. At the board fellow’s option, additional enrichment and service opportunities will be available, including individual tutorials on topics such as group process, influence, fiduciary responsibility of board members, analyzing non-profit financial statements, etc.
