As one<br \/>of five IPs serving with the Aquatic Reserves Program, the selected applicant will provide long-term monitoring and scientific research support for important habitats and species within the state designated Aquatic Reserves: Cherry Point, Cypress Island, Fidalgo Bay, Smith &amp; Minor Island, Protection Island, Maury Island, Nisqually Reach, and Lake Kapowsin. This position operates under the supervision of the Puget SoundCorps Team Lead and Aquatic Reserves Program Manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Position responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to completing sampling for long-term monitoring and scientific research support with Aquatic Reserves, the Puget SoundCorps coordinates with Aquatic Reserves partners and their projects, within DNR and with partner agencies. As a team, we engage in land management and stewardship through both research and restoration. Each IP will take on a lead role in a particular field project and may also have the opportunity to develop an independent research project. In all activities, Puget Sound Corps will represent WCC and WA DNR in a professional manner.<\/p>\n<p>Field projects (50%)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intertidal and subtidal seagrass monitoring using a variety of land and boat-based methods, including remote system operation.<\/li>\n<li>Amphibian surveys, phytoplankton and water quality sampling at our freshwater aquatic reserve.<\/li>\n<li>Larval crab light-trap monitoring.<\/li>\n<li>Invasive European Green Crab trapping and monitoring assistance through a variety of land and boat-based methods.<\/li>\n<li>Aiding other DNR program projects such as ocean acidification monitoring and Olympia oyster spat detection.<\/li>\n<li>Beach cleanups and creosote removal aid.<\/li>\n<li>Monthly land-based restoration efforts at our freshwater aquatic reserve.<\/li>\n<li>Other field projects as they arise, including but not limited to; submerged and floating marine vegetation surveys, kelp harvest surveys, and intertidal sediment sample collection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Office projects (30%)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintaining and tracking records (data submission, vehicle use, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Data management in MS Excel and Survey 123; possible R and GIS use.<\/li>\n<li>Participating in DNR-specific online and in-person trainings.<\/li>\n<li>Updating and organizing materials and data associated with outreach and field projects.<\/li>\n<li>Attending meetings with DNR staff.<\/li>\n<li>Project management support: protocol updates, management plan updates, and other project support, as needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Outreach and education projects (10%)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Engaging in various tabling events and outreach opportunities within DNR and with various<br \/>partner organizations.<\/li>\n<li>Developing posters, educational\/outreach materials, and online content.<\/li>\n<li>Engaging the public while representing the DNR at a variety of events.<\/li>\n<li>Assisting staff to publish a quarterly newsletter.<\/li>\n<li>Providing support to Citizen Stewardship Committees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lab projects (10%)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Processing field samples, including some chemical handling\/ preparation and basic<br \/>microscope tasks.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining proper lab safety and etiquette.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining organization of samples and equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This position involves long periods of sitting in the office, heavy lifting, hiking, and requires serving outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions. This position has strong seasonality, with much of the fieldwork occurring in the spring and summer. This position also requires occasional overnight<br \/>stays, frequent long periods of driving, and travel on motorized and non-motorized boats. The applicant must be comfortable working in and around water. All lab and office projects are stationed in Olympia. Occasional remote service is optional. Field projects occur throughout Puget Sound, Strait of Georgia, and Strait of Juan de Fuca. This position will receive all necessary training, gear, and equipment to safely complete field, lab, and office assignments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility and qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be 18-25 years old, with exceptions for those with military service or mental or sensory disabilities.<\/li>\n<li>Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful U.S. Permanent Resident.<\/li>\n<li>Preference is given to Washington state residents.<\/li>\n<li>Must have a valid driver&#8217;s license and two years of driving experience.<\/li>\n<li>This position is in Olympia and the incumbent should plan to relocate unless already in the area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pay and benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Living allowance of $1,476, twice a month ($2,952 per month, before taxes).<\/li>\n<li>AmeriCorps benefits include:<\/li>\n<li>AmeriCorps Education Award (scholarship) of $7,395 upon successful completion of the term (1,700 service hours).<\/li>\n<li>Loan forbearance for qualified loans during service.<\/li>\n<li>Childcare assistance through the AmeriCorps Childcare Program.<\/li>\n<li>Health insurance starting on the first day of service. WCC pays the monthly insurance premium.<\/li>\n<li>Mental health services through the Member Assistance Program (MAP).<\/li>\n<li>Members may be eligible for food benefits through the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.<\/li>\n<li>Two weeks of professional training.<\/li>\n<li>Access to professional discounts on outdoor gear.<\/li>\n<li>Up to 120 hours of personal time off in addition to observed state holidays and a winter break at the end of December.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Schedule<\/strong>: Typical schedule is 7 a.m. \u2013 5:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday. However, some schedule<br \/>flexibility is a must; we work with the tides.
