They partner closely with the State Director, trustees, and cross functional staff to advance a unified fundraising strategy, ensure alignment with conservation priorities, and cultivate a strong, mission aligned team culture. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Success requires exceptional relationship building skills, strong interpersonal understanding, and the ability to inspire philanthropy through authentic engagement with Montana\u2019s diverse people, communities, and landscapes. The Montana Director of Development reports to the State Director and serves as an active member of the Montana Chapter\u2019s leadership team.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>We\u2019re Looking for You:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Specific responsibilities for this position include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following areas and duties:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Organizational Leadership &amp; Accountability<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the Montana chapter\u2019s long\u2011term fundraising vision and annual\u00a0revenue goals that align with Montana\u00a0conservation\u00a0objectives\u00a0and\u00a0TNC\u2019s North\u00a0American\u00a0and\u00a0global\u00a0priorities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Accountable for the team portfolio currently delivering $4M+ in annual funding, with clear expectations to cultivate growth\u00a0and\u00a0maintain\u00a0long\u00a0term\u00a0financial\u00a0sustainability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Lead a multi\u2011year, donor\u2011centered strategy that builds continuity, trust, and high\u2011impact, place\u2011based engagement.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Establish clear expectations, operating rhythms, and transparent communication across development, conservation, and TNC\u2019s state, local, and global leadership teams.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Act as a public representative of The Nature Conservancy in Montana with colleagues, partners, donors, community leaders, and the broader public.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Ensure adherence to TNC policies, financial controls, ethical standards, and reporting requirements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Donor &amp; Prospect Management<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manage a personal portfolio\u00a0of\u00a0approximately\u00a010-15\u00a0major\u00a0donors, collectively contributing more than $1M annually;\u00a0drive personalized cultivation, well-crafted solicitations, and disciplined stewardship\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Identify\u00a0and cultivate new prospects through trustee, partner, and Montana community networks; leverage TNC tools and best practices.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Bring strong familiarity with nationally and globally connected philanthropic networks to expand opportunities and inform prospect strategy.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Development Team Leadership &amp; Culture<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guide and support a seasoned development team to excel through clear priorities, constructive, data-driven feedback mechanisms, and alignment around shared mission outcomes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Foster an inclusive, trust\u2011based culture anchored in learning, accountability, and shared success.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Drive budgeting, revenue targets, performance analysis, and decisive financial adjustments for Montana\u2019s development program.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Partnership with State Director &amp; Board of Trustees<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintain a close, candid, collaborative partnership with the State Director, sharing ownership of donor strategy, portfolio moves, and fundraising results.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Engage trustees as strategic partners, providing high\u2011level updates and opportunities for meaningful contribution.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>General<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bozeman is the preferred location for this position, with potential for flexibility in Missoula or Helena.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Travel\u00a0frequently,\u00a0as much as 50% of their\u00a0time,\u00a0frequently\u00a0on\u00a0short\u00a0notice\u00a0and outside normal business hours including\u00a0weekends.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Maintains confidentiality\u00a0of\u00a0frequently\u00a0sensitive\u00a0and emotionally charged information.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Develops and administers budget and\u00a0fundraising\u00a0objectives,\u00a0evaluates\u00a0results\u00a0and\u00a0develops corrective strategies as needed\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Ensures that programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for ethical compliance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Directs\u00a0or\u00a0participates\u00a0in\u00a0negotiations for complex,\u00a0high\u00a0profile\u00a0or\u00a0sensitive agreements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Understands and conforms to all Conservancy gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and\/or strain.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><strong>What You\u2019ll Bring:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bachelor\u2019s degree and 8 years related experience, including experience working at a senior level.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience asking for and closing major gifts.<\/li>\n<li>Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.<\/li>\n<li>Experience in planning and delivering budgetary responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li>Experience managing and supervising a multidisciplinary team.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience working in a large, complex, not-for-profit environment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><strong>Desired Qualifications:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Passion for raising money and for identifying new prospective donors (individuals and foundations).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience in negotiating complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience in effective training, coaching, and mentoring skills.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience in managing a geographically dispersed team.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience with current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience with advanced gift planning concepts.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience in nonprofit management best practices. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This position requires a valid driver&#8217;s license and compliance with <strong>TNC\u2019s Auto Safety Program<\/strong>. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate\u2019s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate&#8217;s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
