Leaders will need to commute to the central meeting location each day and transport\u00a0the crew to the daily project site. There is also a 10-day\u00a0leader\u00a0training in\u00a0Eugene,\u00a0OR,\u00a0that involves camping. Project locations\u00a0generally include\u00a0city parks, public lands, and community gardens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BENEFITS:\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$8,880 living stipend<\/li>\n<li>$1,956.35\u00a0AmeriCorps Education\u00a0Award for college tuition or applicable student loans.<\/li>\n<li>Gain industry-sought technical skills, certifications, experience, and references to open career pathways<\/li>\n<li>Network with\u00a0local\u00a0conservation\u00a0nonprofits and land management agency personnel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>POSITION\u00a0OVERVIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect people with nature<\/li>\n<li>Impact\u00a0the lives of young people<\/li>\n<li>Teach job skills and education lessons<\/li>\n<li>Accomplish meaningful service projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Crew Leaders lead, manage, and support\u00a0crews of\u00a0up to 8\u00a0youth ages 15-18\u00a0with one co-leader. Crews include approximately 8 youth members and 2 leaders. Youth members are local high school students from a variety of backgrounds who join a crew to build job skills and improve their local environments.<\/p>\n<p>As a leader, you will\u00a0be responsible for\u00a0ensuring the physical and emotional welfare of your crew. The summer season is\u00a0broken\u00a0into two five-week\u00a0sessions,\u00a0so leaders will oversee two separate groups over their term of service. Crews work Monday through Friday and meet each morning at a central location in their community.\u00a0You&#8217;ll\u00a0work together on hands-on, conservation-oriented projects on federal, state, and private lands, and\u00a0facilitate\u00a0short daily lessons with our accredited outdoor education curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>This is\u00a0hard work. Projects are physically challenging;\u00a0you&#8217;ll\u00a0train your crew to safely use hand tools to\u00a0maintain\u00a0trails, cut down invasive plants, and restore parks and community gardens.\u00a0Many youth crew members are new to the work environment, and you and your co-lead will be responsible for teaching them appropriate job skills, behavior, and language.\u00a0The youth you work with will challenge you to be the best leader you can be, and\u00a0you&#8217;ll\u00a0watch them grow as a team during the summer of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least 20 years old<\/li>\n<li>CPR certification, or willingness to obtain\u00a0prior to employment start date<\/li>\n<li>Current Driver&#8217;s License and willingness and ability to\u00a0frequently\u00a0drive an NYC vehicle, transporting the crew and equipment<\/li>\n<li>Must pass a criminal background check and have an acceptable driving record for the past three years<\/li>\n<li>Recreational\/professional outdoor experience, accustomed to living for periods of time without modern conveniences<\/li>\n<li>Prior experience working with youth\/teens<\/li>\n<li>Experience\/desire in working with populations of wide backgrounds<\/li>\n<li>Excellent organization, time management, punctuality, judgment, and communication skills<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work collaboratively and thrive in a team setting<\/li>\n<li>Spirit of adventure and desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the environment<\/li>\n<li>Experience\/desire in working with populations of broad backgrounds<\/li>\n<li>Support\u00a0the continued growth and delivery of Inclusion and Belonging initiatives and\u00a0seek\u00a0to remove barriers to participation in outdoor programs for underrepresented populations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PHYSICAL DEMANDS\/WORK ENVIRONMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical Condition:\u00a0Applicants in good physical condition, capable of working long hours on strenuous, labor-intensive projects are preferred as NYC&#8217;s work projects often require heavy lifting, constant bending, digging, and long hikes to and from the worksite.<\/li>\n<li>Work\u00a0Environment:\u00a0This position will work outside in all types of weather conditions and environments,\u00a0including but not limited to high elevations, remote areas, cold, rain, snow, heat, humidity, wind, etc. The noise level in the environment is quiet to loud.
